As an art form it has passed its centenary and in the 21st century it is establishing itself as a multi-billion-pound driver of businesses as diverse as design fashion games and entertainment. Indeed it is a crucial driver of attitudes values and ideas. The changes that are happening to broadcasting and other forms of delivery of audio visual material increase the importance of multi-financed film. Film has an essential part to play in provoking creativity entrepreneurial activity and freedom of thought and imagination. It is therefore at the cutting edge culturally and commercially of any nation with ambition to play its part on the world stage. Indaba: A Music Collaboration Hub That Can Build Your Band For You
TechCrunch CA
The site has passed under our radar since launching in 2007 but has grown to over 125000 thousand musicians. Indaba is a music community for musicians looking to remotely collaborate with each other and to share the music they’ve composed. However while the site does make it easy to listen to what other members have created (songs can be played using an intuitive player than sits at the bottom of the screen) Indaba isn’t geared towards promoting your band and gaining fans (at least not yet). To actually create music users typically record their tracks using programs like GarageBand and then upload their tracks to an online session. In these sessions multiple users can use an integrated chat box to talk about tracks and can also use a Flash-based mixer to rearrange pieces from each musician.

It’s not the sort of thing one would think of astaking off in the 21st century. But that’s exactly what folklorist NickSpitzer’s American Routes program did. Since its inception in1998 the weekly two-hour exploration of American roots music anchoredby Spitzer’s relaxed interviews has grown from a modest nationalpresence on seven stations to its current reach — broadcast byroughly 200 stations as well as XM satellite radio. As a producer Spitzer adeptly structures his interviewsto illustrate the connective tissue between his subjects and their workand the culture at large. His one-on-one dialogues also reveal a widercontext tapping into how American culture is an ongoing conversationwith itself. To mark the anniversary American Routes releaseda two-CD set of favorite episodes from the past decade that shows across-section of the program’s focus: interviews are conducted withtorch-passers and -passees like the young neo-traditionalist Cajun bandFeufollet as well as R&B pioneers like the late Rufus Thomas andthe musical oddity Tom Waits. ne episode looks at a forgottenAfrican-American beach resort town where a regional form of soul musicflourished; another visits an eccentric collector who turned his homeinto a radio museum.
