REGION: Gym, biology among colleges’ online offerings

Mark Moses, National’s associate vice president of regional operations for the San Diego region, said university officials believe there is a “latent need” for the university’s online classes in Southwest County. “There’s an awful lot of people there that are interested in National University, and right now they’re traveling down to Rancho Bernardo or Carlsbad to get the help they need,” Moses said. International marketingCollege officials said the online classes have grown because they are more convenient for students with busy home and work lives, and open up courses to single parents with young children and people with disabilities who may be unable to travel to campus. For continuing education schools such as UC Riverside Extension, which serves mainly working people seeking to advance their careers or switch jobs, online classes also provide a way to support niche programs that otherwise would have too few students to be viable. The college has three nursing certificates offered only online that Campbell said would not have been able to exist without online classes. “There’s not a huge need for forensic nurses in our particular area, but nationally and internationally, there’s a lot of potential there,” Campbell said. “By going online, we’ve been able to market to nurses nationally and internationally.
