Helping us to love libraries
Irish Times, Ireland
“In terms of a recession, library membership often goes up,” Maher says. “People are less likely to just pick up a paperback with the weekly shop any more. ” IN SOUTH DUBLIN, library membership has grown steadily in recent years. County librarian Ian Stobbart believes Irish libraries are evolving. Since Tallaght Library reopened in April it has recorded 70,000 internet sessions, many of them by immigrants using the facilities to keep in touch with friends and family and read newspapers and websites in their own languages. The library runs a number of classes in Polish, and it has introduced a new self-service option. “It’s like Tesco, but easier,” Stobbart jokes.
Senior Day win a good ending for Rapinoes
ESPN
– With a full house of 4,892 fans on hand at the University of Portland’s Merlo Field to say goodbye for the final home game of the regular season, twins Megan and Rachael Rapinoe waited with teammate Korie Nicholson for Senior Day ceremonies to get underway before Sunday’s game against Santa Clara. But just as the public address announcer launched into an intro, the stadium’s audio system shut down, the circuits overloaded by the strain of extra equipment associated with the ESPNU broadcast. Forced to improvise, assistant coach Lauren Hanson jogged across the field to borrow a megaphone from the student section. She then handed it off to associate athletic director Buzz Stroud, and like something out of the movie “Eight Men Out,” he stood in front of the crowd and introduced the seniors and their parents. It seems nothing has ever gone quite according to plan for the Rapinoes.

When Junon is also diagnosed with leukemia, all are tested to see who can be a donor, and then the whole family – including lovesick cousin Simon (Laurent Capelluto) and Henri’s daft Jewish girlfriend, Faunia (Emmanuelle Devos) – returns home for a long Christmas weekend. All crowded again under the same roof, solidarity quickly – and hilariously – devolves into feuding, drunkenness and bed-hopping, as everyone struggles to make sense of the mysteries of family, life, and what lies ahead.
