Home theatres speak volumes for change
Economic Times, India
Sales of cassette players have
significantly dropped due to a technology shift towards CD and MP3 formats. It
is only CD players that have managed to retain sales though it is a very small
segment,? said Philips Electronics India V-P (consumer lifestyle) S
Nagarajan. Little wonder, Samsung?s home theatre sales has
grown by over 40% this year. It is now launching six new models for the festive
season. ?The healthy growth in home theatres is also linked with the sales
of LCD TVs. We are seeing a near 25% attachment ratio of home theatres and LCD
TV sales,? Samsung India deputy MD R Zutshi told ET. The
average price of home theatre systems have fallen from Rs 20,000 to Rs 9,000
over the last two years.

filled with 15,050 cubic feet of helium on Parade day. Along for the ride down Broadway and taking a leave from the Smurf
village, Papa Smurf and Smurfette will follow the Smurf balloon on a float
featuring a replica of one of the Smurfs legendary mushroom shaped homes. Not
to be left out of the balloon fun, the entire Smurf mushroom home will be an
inflatable balloon too!

“Without a doubt, the sky will be blue this Thanksgiving,” said Amy Kule,
producer of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “We are thrilled to help The
Smurfs celebrate their 50th Anniversary with a new giant balloon that will be
one of the highlights of this year’s Parade. Following closely behind this
flying wonder will be the ubiquitous mushroom village float holding the
classic characters everybody remembers so well: Papa Smurf and Smurfette. ”
Kule continued, “We are pleased that following this inaugural flight, a whole
new generation will have a chance to get to know and love the Smurfs for many
more decades to come. ”

Historically, during tough economic times such as we are currently experiencing, people tend to turn to the current entertainment sources for escape. And the electronics industry as well as the movie studios have grown increasingly dependent on ordinary consumers. During economic crunches when business hunkers down, Americans keep buying bigger screens, sleeker cellphones, faster and more compact computers, and attend, rent or purchase the latest Hollywood blockbusters. But in today’s serious economic gloom consumers won’t continue to blithely spend on high-tech gear and expensive evenings at the multiplex. Bargains will be more important than before. Things are tightening up.

OperatorYour next question comes from Jim Ricchiuti – Needham & Company. Jim Ricchiuti – Needham & CompanyI was wondering, if you could give us a sense as to how the retail sell-through tract is; the quarter progressed and maybe thus far in October? I guess what I?m trying to get is a sense as to what extent your retailers have grown more cautious and how much more cautious in recent weeks just given the economic environment?Colin AngleSure, as I said in the call, sell-through and our performance in Q3 was very, very strong, but we certainly have seen some drop-off and weakening in retail sales thus far to the fourth quarter and our guidance reflects our best guess of how that weakening will continue and where it will end up at the end of the quarter, but there is substantial uncertainty depending on who you listen to; predictions run from bad to dire and we?re trying to make sure that we treat our inventory position and treat our expectation as to Q4 performance appropriately. So that is the biggest area of current uncertainty in our business and we?re doing our best to appropriately manage that risk. Jim Ricchiuti – Needham & CompanyColin, if we look at the international business, to what extent is that caution coming through in that portion of the business which has grown very rapidly the last couple of quarters. You?re seeing the same kind of conservatism?Colin AngleWell I think that?s the difference between our domestic and International performance represent the fact that internationally we are very early in the adoption of Roombas and so that our market penetration is so small that despite the worsening economic environment, we still continue to grow sales because we?re moving off such a small base, but it is doubtless, that in a different economic environment we would see even more improvements internationally. So, we?re taking that conservatively and trying to set the modest expectations for what?s going to happen in the fourth quarter than going forward internationally as well.

Microsoft Taps Multiply.com as New Home for MSN Groups
ReadWriteWeb, CA
Florida-based Multiply. com announced last week that it has 10 million registered users and sees 18 million monthly unique visitors – both numbers that have grown 100% year over year. Compare that to Facebook, which. Multiply has a rabidly loyal following, something that might change with an infusion of MSN Groups members, and its feature set is impressive.
