Home theatres speak volumes for change
Economic Times, India
Sales of cassette players have
significantly dropped due to a technology shift towards CD and MP3 formats. It
is only CD players that have managed to retain sales though it is a very small
segment,? said Philips Electronics India V-P (consumer lifestyle) S
Nagarajan. Little wonder, Samsung?s home theatre sales has
grown by over 40% this year. It is now launching six new models for the festive
season. ?The healthy growth in home theatres is also linked with the sales
of LCD TVs. We are seeing a near 25% attachment ratio of home theatres and LCD
TV sales,? Samsung India deputy MD R Zutshi told ET. The
average price of home theatre systems have fallen from Rs 20,000 to Rs 9,000
over the last two years.

Ford tool to improve teen safety: MyKey
Consumer reports
With MyKey, the owner can set up tighter restrictions on various safety elements, such as a chime that sounds and the audio system to mute until the safety belt is buckled; low-fuel warning at 75 miles to empty (rather than 50); a limit of top speed to 80 mph (this is fairly ridiculous when you consider that two cars hitting head-on at only 40 mph create an unsurvivable collision. MyKey will enable parents to operate their own home-grown. Ford claims that if parents can control the car?s speed, they?ll be likely to let their teen have the keys more often, which in turn will make that teen more happy.

Mobile Handset Solutions, Part 2: Network Flexibility
Embedded.com, Ca.
Handset manufacturers were informed of this shortcoming very quickly by all the UMC market contenders. Their response, however, was rather slow because the early upside market opportunity for UMC sales was too small. As the market has grown, handset manufacturers have acknowledged the need for application-directed audiorouting and have begun providing device-specific SDKs to be linked with UMC applications. The good news on this front is that the third and subsequent generation of dual-mode phones will not be plagued with this problem. The current dual-mode installed base, however, might not be blessed with such options. Many of thesephones have been through end-of-life (EOL) and no future engineering resources willbe applied. In selecting a UMC solution, it will be important to know whether the application vendor has partnered with the handset vendor on this issue and has embedded the audio routing into its product.

Online post-secondary school is booming, and it looks like there’s …

Almost 20 years later, it has grown into the largest private university in North America. The institution has nearly 200 campus locations and online students from around the world. "That’s why we feel like we’re really one of the pioneers," said Chris Mason, campus director for the University of Phoenix’s Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, campus locations. Online education started to filter into tri-state area higher education institutions in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The first area college to offer an online program was UW-P in 1999.
