“She said her grandma makes the best pizza in the whole world,” Betty Van Riper said. “So we went to Pizza Hut, and she wouldn’t get out of the car. ”The Van Ripers, who have their own grown children and grandchildren and have hosted nine other exchange students, eventually relented and took Sally to a different restaurant. In an e-mail, Sally said she really loved and missed all her classmates at Kelso High School from two years ago and especially recalled drama and Spanish classes fondly. She speaks English, Russian and Georgian, and the Van Ripers said she earned a 3. 7 grade point average as a senior — though 16 at the time. On top of her Kelso schoolwork, Darrell Van Riper said, Sally would have a nightly study session with her father through the Internet to prepare her for upcoming university entrance exams.

The purpose of the festival is to raise awareness of the Independent Film Industry in Oklahoma and to promote the restoration and preservation of the Ritz Theatre. Moviegoers will be able to find an array of films in categories such as Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, Narrative Short, Documentary Short, Student Feature, Student Short, Okie Home Grown Feature, Okie Home Grown Short and Native American Feature. The festivities will begin with an opening night party starting at 8 p. 11, a meet and greet with filmmakers from around the country.
