Force of a billion to power India’s F1 ambition
Times of India – Mar 5, 2008
“No one believed India would have a Formula One team but we
are there,” the flamboyant billionaire Mallya said during the team’s launch in
January. “I feel proud that an Indian has put its flag on the F1
circuit,” Mallya added, pointing to the white, saffron and green of the Indian
tricolour in the team’s logo. India became hooked on Formula One
when home-grown Narain Karthikeyan raced for Jordan in 2005 and test drove with
Williams over the past two years. Compatriat Karun Chandhok test drove with Red
Bull. The sport’s commercial rights’ owner Bernie Ecclestone is
convinced Formula One’s financial future lies in India and China in the form of
untapped advertising revenues from large TV audiences. India has
been provisionally granted a race in 2010 provided the promoters, the Indian
Olympic Association, meet the stuatory requirements – like building an expensive
race track. Television currently reaches around 110 million Indian
homes.

"I will need to iron out the status of Eguavoen and Ike with the NFA against the background that I was named the interim coach without anyone named to assist me," Peters said. State in safe hands

Having cleared up the costly mess of Richard Butler’s brief but controversial stint in 2004, Mr Lennon has taken no chances with the next two vice-regal appointments, each time asking Tasmania’s chief justice to fill the role. Departing Governor William Cox and his replacement Justice Peter Underwood are both eminently suitable choices for the highest office in the state. They continue an emerging tradition of trusted home-grown appointments from the Supreme Court bench, which began with Sir Stanley Burbury and continued with Sir Guy Green. Some Tasmanians would be disappointed Mr Lennon did not make a break with the past by asking a woman, a migrant or an Aborigine. They would say it is a lost opportunity to set a new tone for the state but they are looking to the wrong Premier for daring selections. Mr Lennon saw what happened after his predecessor Jim Bacon chose Mr Butler in 2003. The flamboyant diplomat and former UN chief weapons inspector in Iraq was supposed to be a breath of fresh air who would raise Tasmania’s profile and promote its interests in Australia and overseas.
Gunfire too common to raise alarm in Memphis, Tenn., neighborhood…
International Herald Tribune – Mar 5, 2008
“It wouldn't have mattered; it takes the police so long to get out here,” he said. Last fall, the FBI ranked Memphis eighth in the country for reports of serious crimes per capita, though local law enforcers questioned the FBI's methodology. Ricky Hall, 52, who lives near the home were the bodies were found, says the neighborhood has grown more unkempt and dangerous in the past few years, with many rental homes sitting empty. He said he had no information about the case but, like his neighbors, hopes someone can provide clues to police. “Somebody must have seen or heard something,” he said. ___ Associated Press writers Woody Baird in Memphis and Rose French in Nashville contributed to this report.
It Sure Looks Like a Recession
BusinessWeek – Mar 5, 2008
Surveys of purchasing managers show that manufacturing and nonmanufacturing activity is contracting. The drop in home sales and homebuilding is unrelenting, and house prices are… The most immediate stress is lost buying power because of surging prices for food and fuel. For the past three months, consumer spending has fallen for everything except necessities. Inflation-adjusted outlays for nondiscretionary items, such as food, energy, housing, and medical care, have grown at a 3. Spending on everything else, some 52% of all outlays, has fallen 1. The bigger problem is that households are losing all the cushions they have depended on in the past to absorb these kinds of blows.
