"In retrospect commercial galleries are notoriously difficult to get going and keep going and a gallery that runs for 18 months is not that unusual even now," Vial points out. "I think it was successful in the sense that it brought all those artists and designers together for the first time, and showed a movement which was home grown. "In an effort to capture Hitchings' integral place in New Zealand's cultural history, the museum's exhibition goes one step further than simply providing a broad overview, in fact, they have built a scaled-down version of the gallery itself. "I see it as a memory of Helen Hitchings, and that is the way we have approached it, it is sort of theatrical," production designer David Waller says. Based on a selection of 22 photographs of the gallery, Vial and the museum were able to source the actual pieces that were displayed and recreate the exact design of the space, even down to the ornaments and shelving. Due to the value of the work, the public is not allowed to step inside the gallery but instead must view it through its windows and a hole in the polystyrene wall.
