Keegan plans move for Dunne
Irish Times – Jan 18, 2008
“I have met the owner, Mike Ashley, and I like him very much. I also met the chairman, Chris Mort, and just talking to them, I felt they both knew what they are doing. ” If Keegan’s arrival sent Tyneside into raptures, the prospect of home-grown legend Alan Shearer joining him has caused almost as much excitement. The Keegan-Shearer ‘dream ticket’ was at the top of the fans’ wish-list in the immediate aftermath of Allardyce’s departure. Whether or not Keegan wants the 37-year-old, whether or not Shearer wants to be involved – he has indicated he will happily speak to the new manager about his plans – and whether or not the two men could work together remains to be seen. © 2008 ireland.

Home field advantage? New Jersey sod farm grows Green Bay’s…
San Diego Union Tribune – Jan 18, 2008
Nationally, the sod industry is feeling the impact of the housing market slowdown, but sales to other outlets like sports fields continue to be strong, Hunter said. Sales grew by 25 percent to $1 billion from 1997 to 2002, according to the most recent figures from the federal census of agriculture. More than 386,000 acres of sod were grown in 2002, and Hunter expects a steady increase when the 2007 figures are released. Bill Squires, president of the Stadium Managers Association, said many NFL teams prefer natural grass to artificial or synthetic turf. But he said real grass gets torn up when stadiums are used by other sports teams, and during concerts. “The challenge we all have is the amount of use, the type of use and the climate that we play in,” he said. “Flat out, I’m a grass guy.

Who Needs China’s New 3G Technology?
BusinessWeek – Jan 18, 2008
”Beijing has endlessly delayed the launch of 3G in China because Beijing has wanted to promote the development of a home-grown alternative to the two 3G standards common everywhere else in the world. Since the work on the Chinese standard, TD-SCDMA, has taken a lot longer than anybody in the government seems to have expected, the 3G story in China has been one of delay after delay, with people in the industry hopefully predicting that this time things would be different and the government would finally get moving and give out 3G licenses to Chinese telecom operators. Well, we’re now in January of 2008 and not only does China not have 3G service, it still hasn’t even awarded 3G licenses. This was supposed to be China’s flagship project to prove to the world that the country could be an innovation leader. If so, let’s hope for China’s sake that the other projects go a lot better… Hwai Lin Khor notes, “If the price points of handsets and services are attractive, TD-SCDMA may not need to fear WCDMA in the domestic market. ” China’s influence on Hong Kong’s telecommunications industry is becoming more significant. This is apparent through the recent 850MHz band spectrum auction for CDMA2000 services, to ensure continuity of roaming services for China’s visitors using CDMA handsets. “It is no surprise that TD-SCDMA will eventually make its move into the island once the Chinese government has finalized its 3G outcome,” says Hwai Lin Khor. In fact, 5MHz of TDD spectrum was already allocated to the UMTS licensees when the license was issued. “However, the success of TD-SCDMA in a mature market such as Hong Kong’s is heavily dependent on market forces. It will face tough competition outside Mainland China.

Local talent drawcards
NEWS.com.au – Jan 18, 2008
article-tools –> Matt Connors January 19, 2008 12:00am BIG name drawcards Silverchair, Bjork and reformed angst rockers Rage Against the Machine may drag most music lovers to the Big Day Out, but this year’s bill features the strongest line-up of Queensland bands in the event’s history. The annual rock festival, held tomorrow at the Gold Coast Parklands at Southport, boasts a bevy of home-grown talent including Regurgitator, Gold Coast upstarts Operator Please, Iron On, Yves Klein Blue, Afro Dizzi Act, The Kindness of Strangers and Brisbane folk rockers The Gin Club. Gold Coast acts Miacarla, Lynchmada, Bark at the Moon and The Black Market Rhythm Co also get to play before the crowd of 53,000 – as do Krill, a five-piece sibling band originally from Yeppoon and now based in Sydney. "The Big Day Out strongly believes in supporting local talent and we are thrilled to have so many Queensland acts on the bill," a Big Day Out spokesperson said. Yves Klein Blue frontman Michael Tomlinson said the four-piece, formed in 2006, was thrilled to be performing at Big Day Out. "It’s sort of surreal," Tomlinson said… They have signed a record deal with local label Dew Process, operated by Powderfinger manager Paul Piticco. "It was great that we could sign with the best label around and that they were based in Queensland," Tomlinson said. Q Music executive officer Denise Foley said the Queensland contingent was another indicator of the health of the local industry. "It’s great so many local acts are playing such a prestigious national event," Ms Foley said. Share this article.

Global posting key to growth for Indians
Economic Times – Jan 18, 2008
There are essentially three
ways to secure international experience at senior managerial levels. The first is to be part of an
Indian company which wants home grown talent to be appointed as custodial
managers – CEO, CFO, Head of Supply Chain – in a global location. The second is
to be an expatriate manager within the management circuit of an MNC like Pepsi,
Unilever or IBM. The third is to independently apply for a position in a country
of choice through job portals, search firms and newspaper advertisements. The dominant trend is towards
working with an Indian group and aspiring for a global posting. In such cases
the candidate has the dual advantage of working in an international location and
having the option to return to India whenever it is feasible.

Ed Poenicke | Friday, January 18, 2008 at 12:30 am Vegetable gardens are expected to be plentiful this year because of the unstable economy. More people are going to either start a vegetable garden or add to their gardens to off-set their budgets, have a healthier lifestyle, or because they will be home more as opposed to traveling. Some people who may not want a large garden or have the space for one, still want to enjoy home-grown vegetables. A few containers filled with vegetables on a patio, balcony or rooftop also can meet the desire to have a vegetable garden. Vegetable plants that work well include pepper, tomato or cucumber plants. There are several good reasons for growing vegetables: Homegrown vegetables taste better; they are fresher, the quality is improved and most of all, you can say you grew them yourself. The enjoyment of working in your own vegetable garden can provide a new hobby or increase your interest in other forms of gardening.
