English football needs united front to progress

There are those who favour some form of squad wage cap. If it was to be agreed by the Premier League, which I doubt, it would have to be at such a high level that it would take years to be effective, but it would prevent another club taking player wages into the stratosphere in future. However, I favour a ‘home- grown’ rule as being the most effective of all. A sensible level could be agreed that need not affect the attraction of the Premier League and the world’s biggest stars. Many in football say: “If you’re good enough, you’re old enough. ” But apart from exceptional talents, most youngsters get into teams because of either injury or the economics of a club dictating the size of the squad (normally below the Premier League). If you ask those successful young players how they made it, apart from skill and application, they’ll tell you it was because they got a break… Club England is the most important team in the country. So I hope all of us involved in the game will hold ourselves accountable to deliver a way forward befitting that status. Some will say that home-grown player rules are in breach of European law but why couldn’t we agree it voluntarily? Sir Alex Ferguson and Steven Gerrard have spoken up in support. They have seen the writing on the wall.
