Ballymoney home in on cup again
Belfast Telegraph – Nov 19, 2007
"But it looks like we’re going to have to do it the hard way this season. " The girls certainly had a happy homecoming after schoolgirl Sally Stewart-Moore grabbed a golden goal winner with two minutes of extra time left. "Sally is one of our home grown players who have come up through the system and it was great for her to come off the bench to score the winner. " added McVicker "Sure it was a long journey back but it was a happy bus and we played DVDs to keep ourselves occupied. " Victorians produced the shock result of the day when they dismissed Old Alex on a 2-0 scoreline at UUJ. That win has earned them a difficult trip to Dublin to face Loreto who beat last year’s beaten finalists Pembroke Wanderers on penalties. Randalstown cruised into the last eight in after a 6-0 win over Ashton and they’ll now meet Pegasus or ‘Quins in the quarters.
Stephen King: Football, migration and the blame game

What about other national teams? Italy, the current World Champions, provide a different perspective. All of the players in the Azzurri’s 2006 winning squad came from their domestic league and their domestic league is, in turn, dominated by Italian players. During the 2006-07 season, Italian players contributed 70 per cent of all appearances in Serie A, whereas the equivalent figure for English players in the Premier League was only 43 per cent (although while Spain’s league is dominated by home grown talent, their national team isn’t exactly a beacon of success). The German Bundesliga’s domestic quotient was also 43 per cent last year and yet the German team isn’t doing too badly, in sixth place in the FIFA rankings, only two places below Italy. And, in any case, who’d want to emulate Serie A’s earlier reputation for endemic corruption? The biggest difficulty, though, with the “too many foreigners” argument is the sheer introspection of the approach. FIFA ranks Argentina and Brazil first and second in the world, but how many of their players are benefiting from regular performances in the Brazilian and Argentine domestic leagues? Of Bra-zil’s current squad, only one player earns his wages in Brazil. For Argentina, only five play in the domestic league.
Jajah Launches Its Direct ‘VoIP Without A PC’ Service
InformationWeek – Nov 19, 2007
Noting that no computer or device beyond a standard phone is required for the service, Scharf said its home-grown infrastructure enables it to deliver the service directly to users. To use Jajah Direct, a consumer calls an access number and calls a destination phone number upon hearing a dial tone. The originator of the call is immediately connected to the destination number dialed. The first call is free. Users receive a local number for each “friend” or “colleague” called and the number is sent to the call originator, usually via text message.
Playing fields and killing fields
Jerusalem Post – Nov 19, 2007
They pushed the shards into the hearts of other die-hard followers. Home-grown terror hit the capital’s Malha stadium when a firecracker (what Americans call an M-80) was lobbed into the arena during a Hapoel Jerusalem-Hapoel Holon basketball game on November 11. Security guard Yoav Glitzstein was wounded in the attack as he bravely picked up the exploding device to protect players. (American immigrant Dr. Michael Chernofsky succeeded in reattaching the three nearly severed fingers of the 42-year-old guard’s right hand. ) Foul play has never seemed so foul.

They grow to cherish even more a trusted spouse and other family members, people they can count on to be as frank as they are loyal. The breakdown of the family must surely have had its effect on the individuals who have entered politics in recent years. Just as private sector employers are seeing applicants well-armed with myriad degrees and absolutely no knowledge of basic home-grown morals and mores, today’s wannabe politicians could be suffering from some serious gaps in their upbringing. Well aware of these realities and the heady effect of power, the more mature heads in politics should have developed a thoughtful, compassionate mentorship programme for these promising young leaders. The ‘school for politicians’ begins with the youth arms, where individuals are trained in the art of politics, and having moved through the ranks, emerge as the new ‘flavour of the month’. What a dizzying experience! Suddenly you are either junior minister, senator or government spokesperson. Photographers and reporters are in hot pursuit and you see yourself on television, hear yourself on radio and have scrapbooks filled with photographs of your wonderful self.
Sometimes just a few drops will do

It was made in Israel. There is not much water in Israel, so I assume they know what they are doing when they design irrigation systems. The drip holes in this plastic tube are 90cm apart, which is all right for vines but a little too far apart for home-grown tomatoes. To solve this problem, I loop the piping around so my tunnel-house beds each have three drip lines. There is a clockwork timer on the outdoor taps of the house, and I can deliver what I think is a sustainable amount of water to each plant, although if you don't want the pipe to deliver water all the way from the house to the greenhouse, you need to connect it to ordinary, hole-free, low- density black Alkathene piping. The way I did this simple task took me many hours, and the lack of engineering elegance in the result would make a plumber cry. I added newspaper, peastraw and compost between the plants to conserve the moisture from this irrigation initiative.
