The next challenge for whoever took over was to get the team consistently in the semfinals and finals but he was adamant he left Waikato rugby in a much better state than it was in when he took over. “I think there’s some great players coming through, some good structures in place. “It’s the most All Blacks we’ve had (this year), I think there’s some real exciting home-grown youngsters coming through that we’ve been working hard to develop and are getting to the Chiefs level. ” But he was disappointed some of that development had not been recognised by the Chiefs and felt players like lock-loosie Mark Burman and young hooker Vern Kamo should have been given a chance in next year’s Super 14. “That’s why I admire what Robbie (Deans) does with the Crusaders, taking punts on players who aren’t even involved in the top 22 for Canterbury. ” Gatland said Waikato would be very strong once it got all its All Blacks and injured players back. He was enthusiastic about the promising young players he had groomed and introduced to first-class rugby in the past couple of seasons as well as a couple yet to debut such as injured young lock Romana Graham and schoolboy wing Henry Speight, whom he believes could be “quite special”.
