Youth movement afoot as teams harvest home-grown prospects
USA Today – Nov 13, 2007
While posting their first winning year since 1992 and contending until the last weekend of the season, the Brewers did boost their payroll to $72 million. But they got most of their production from inexpensive players who still are years from free agency. Fielder, Braun and Hardy delivered a combined 110 home runs and 296 RBI at a total cost of a little more than $1 million. “Everybody knows the younger players are the most valuable if they’re talented because you can control them,” Melvin says. “It’s just a matter of the lack of patience. The media, the fan base, a lot of times want you to go for the big free agent. They want you to pay the guy $100 million to get somebody… And if they have good prospects, to avoid being seduced into trading them at the deadline to fill a need for a veteran that could help them for just that one year. A young guy could be a key piece for 10 years. ”
GMs OF TEAMS that have built their core around homegrown talent say a number of factors can scuttle such efforts, including injuries, misjudging talent and rushing players. The biggest challenge they face, however, is buying enough time to let the results show. The 24-hour news cycle, a mushrooming media and season ticketholders demanding a winning product maintain pressure on teams to deliver now. Colorado has put together a rock-solid foundation by drafting left fielder.

The small car dream-merchants
Economic Times – Nov 13, 2007
From 2008, it will also face new competition
at the lower end of the market of which it is the sole leader at present and the
margins are as low as
1-2%. Will the Tata’s
Peoples’ car pull the plug on M800? Maruti wouldn’t want to exit the A
segment, in which the 800 and the Omni are the only products. But, the
home-grown Maruti is always known to come back with a bang in the face of
competition. Remember 1999 and early 2000? New entrants had launched an
extraordinary attack on the B segment. Erstwhile Daewoo launched the Matiz,
Hyundai launched the Santro and Telco launched the Indica. Roughly around the
same time, Fiat slashed the prices of Uno. Maruti laid out a grand plan to
counter these entrants… Maruti laid out a grand plan to
counter these entrants. It decided to launch models in every segment of the car
market. Renault-Bajaj
to enter small car segment

And
it’s not just home-grown majors. Global players have jumped into the fray. Renault along with its partner Nissan is known for its ability to produce top
quality small cars for the mass market. The company has in recent times created
waves globally by producing some radical looking cars in the small car segment
and making a huge success out of
it. Bajaj Auto will lead the
three-way exclusive global alliance with Renault-Nissan for the project.

Every English region should be given London’s powers
Guardian Unlimited – Nov 13, 2007
While new forms of community localism are necessary in England, this is no substitute for making accountable, via election, the existing intermediate tier of regional government. At the same time this tier needs to be given at least those regional powers over transport, regeneration and planning enjoyed in Greater London. Jenkins writes: “If England’s cities and counties enjoyed the powers of the Scottish parliament, as they did until the second half of the 20th century, they would offer Brown a home-grown answer to the ‘West Lothian’ conundrum. Scottish MPs would no longer be voting on England’s health, education and social care policies because they would have been delegated to Cornwall, Yorkshire, Manchester and London. “But is this a good enough answer? Even the largest local authorities cannot provide the integrated solutions required for strategic services such as transport. Partnerships proceed at the pace of the most reluctant council, whereas a single regional authority can take the often contentious steps required to tackle congestion and other threats to prosperity. Jenkins is right to say: “What is happening in Scotland is what has been happening throughout Europe.
