Ellsbury, other young players eager to deliver Sox wins

“All of them have been great,” Pedroia said. “A lot of us played together in the minor leagues and we’ve all gone the same route. It’s huge when you have home-grown guys coming up. If you look at a lot of teams, like the Indians and Twins, they rely on their home-grown guys. It’s huge for the Red Sox to start doing that, and with our payroll it makes us that much better. ”Obviously, talent and hard work are the main factors allowing young players to reach this level. But staying and being accepted by the players, coaches and the manager, also factor into rookies’ being able to contribute.

But he wears no sanctimony. Brown is a sensualist, which becomes evident the minute he starts kneading bread dough, as he did later in the Chronicle test kitchen, or describing what he’s brought to fuel him through a long afternoon of interviews. Arrayed in three plastic containers that once held fresh mozzarella are salads he’s made: one a julienne of radishes and zucchini, home-grown tomatoes and arugula; another, finely sliced avocado and tomatoes; the third, thin bits of apple from his tree and dried apricots. Brown believes in cleavers, not Cuisinarts, which shows in the precision of the slices and dices. The radish salad contains small bites of smoked salmon, and Brown says he occasionally also eats meat, though he never cooks it. “I’ve never been a vegetarian. But I’m eating more and more vegetables,” he says, mainly because he thinks they’re better for his body.

Earlier this month, the government raided the epicentre of radical extremism on an island some 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of Male and detained over 50 people who clashed with police and security forces. Saeed said Maldivian extremists may be inspired by events in Afghanistan and Iraq, but the troubles in the atoll nation were essentially due to underlying domestic issues. "I believe it is home grown," said Saeed, who quit as attorney general in August saying the government was not taking adequate measures to deal with the problem. Asian diplomats believe the government may even be trying to play up religious extremism to allow it to crack down on dissent in a country that recognised political parties only two years ago. Shares will remain on sale until November 15, while a minimum value for a single underwriting was set at $6,000, the company said at a news conference. The offered shares of the Dubai government-controlled company will be listed by the end of November on the two-year-old Dubai International Financial Exchange (DIFX), it said. “We are delighted it will be the first home-grown Dubai company to be listed on the DIFX,” said Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, chairman of Dubai World and its subsidiary DP World. Earlier reports had suggested that DP World, which manages 42 terminals in five continents, was seeking to raise around $4 billion by selling shares to the public. The largest public offer in the region so far was when Saudi Telecom raised more than $4 billion in its first-ever IPO in 2003. DP World previously raised $3. 5 billion through the issuing of convertible Islamic bonds in January 2006 with a January 2008 maturity date.
