Women hold very few top jobs, study says
San Francisco Chronicle – Oct 17, 2007
Of the 400 companies surveyed, only 13 had a female CEO, the study’s authors said. – Marisa LagosMedflies in San Jose bring quarantine zoneThe California Department of Food and Agriculture established a 75-square-mile quarantine zone in East San Jose on Tuesday, following the recent detection of a Mediterranean fruit fly infestation. The quarantine requires that home-grown fruits and vegetables in the area not be moved elsewhere in the state, as they may be hosting medflies, which can infest more than 260 types of produce. Department of Agriculture imposed its own quarantine in the same area, controlling the movement of fruits and vegetables to other states. In San Jose, the quarantine boundary is Old Piedmont Road on the north, Blossom Hill Road on the south, State Highway 87 and I-880 on the west, and Quimby Road in Alum Rock Park on the east.
Spectre of terrorism in the House
New Zealand Herald – Oct 17, 2007
A mood of some apprehension and not a little foreboding hung heavily over Parliament yesterday as MPs struggled to comprehend the potential enormity of Monday’s arrests of political activists allegedly involved in covert military-style training camps. Obliterating everything else on the political agenda was the spectre of home-grown terrorism potentially come to life. MPs collectively resembled the hospital patient waiting to be told whether the diagnosis was good or bad. Only in this case, MPs know they may have to wait some time for the diagnosis, which is bound to be unfavourable one way or the other. Either the police have the evidence that certain individuals allegedly participating in military-style training camps posed a credible terrorist threat. Or the police have gone completely over the top, the evidence will be found wanting and the head of Police Commissioner Howard Broad will consequently be on a platter.
Alleged Maori plot against whites

Most of the suspects remain in custody although Mr Lockett has been given bail, despite police opposition. Tame Iti was denied bail and has been remanded in custody until 24 October. Police Association president Greg O’Connor said the operation was a “reality check” for New Zealanders who dismissed the threat of home-grown terrorism. “This operation has been triggered by credible intelligence of a serious threat to New Zealand’s safety and security, and the Police Association fully supports the actions taken by police yesterday,” he said. “We need to realise there are fringe elements in our society, as in all others, that draw inspiration and encouragement from extremist activities overseas that most of us would find horrifying,” he added.
EARLES’ MARTINSVILLE SPEEDWAY DREAM GAINS HISTORIC STATUS

The wording for each marker must be reviewed and edited by the manager of the marker program and the staff of the Department of Historic Resources. The location has to be approved by the Board of Historic Resources. “What Bill Monroe is to bluegrass music, Martinsville Speedway is to NASCAR. Both came along at about the same time in the late 1940s and made home-grown forms of entertainment wildly popular throughout the world,” said Kathleen S. Kilpatrick, director of the Department of Historic Resources. “Virginia’s NASCAR roots arose out of the state’s southwestern communities and Blue Ridge Mountain hollows. It’s an important recreational heritage in Virginia and we are delighted to recognize that legacy through the new historical marker for Martinsville Speedway.
A world of difference in negotiating rates

The administrative costs entailed in multi-currency transactions that arise with full international private medical insurance. Mr Scullion said: “If you put those things together you are going to add very significantly to the cost of international cover over traditional home-grown UK comprehensive private medical insurance. “International insurers work on higher margins, aiming to pay out less than £70 in claims for every £100 in premiums. “On their UK domestic book they would be looking at a loss ratio in the region of 80 or even 82 per cent,” Mr Scullion said. He advised people seeking a ‘split lifestyle’ plan to consult an independent adviser.
Uganda: Cranes Still Heroes Despite Ghana ’08 Exit

All roads were full of columns of people. Don't worry people were not demonstrating this time but showing support with T-shirts inscribed on Cranes names of Obua, Sekajja etc. This was my first time to notice Ugandans priding in their home grown treasures. Otherwise, what one usually encounters is the madness of Ugandans donning T-shirts inscribed on Ronaldo (AC Milan- Italy; Henry, Ronaldhinho- Bercelona etc). I could not help stopping to cheer the crowds as they showed their support to our boys. One other stunning revelation was where the approximately 45,000 people got Shs15,000 each as entrance fee in a country where poverty levels stagger at around 31% with 9,000,000 people wallowing in chronic poverty! There is no other way one can interprete this sacrifice other than nationalism and patriotism. "Success in football just like any other activity requires financial investment.
