City of Transients? The Data Debunk the Label
Washington Post - Oct 1, 2007
That group of jaded and homesick young professionals I heard complaining about the city the other night concluded their conversation thread with one woman pointedly chastising the guy across the table: “You’re not thinking about all the other quadrants of the city,” she said. “Maybe on your block, nobody’s from here, but in most of the city, I think that’s not true. ” She got that right.

How Barcelona Spawns Stars
Soccer America - Oct 1, 2007
Everything is with the ball. We work on skills and some tactics. " One of the most famous home-grown Barcelona products is Josep Guardiola, who last summer joined Barcelona's youth development program staff and coaches the "B" team. He noticed some differences from when he joined Barcelona's program in 1984 at age 13. "The children are surrounded by their parents - and their agents!" said Josep Guardiola,. "When I was a kid, we didn't have agents and our parents weren't involved. " When Guardiola was 19, Coach Johan Cruyff brought him into the first team, which is now known as the "Dream Team," having won the 1992 European Cup and four straight La Liga titles.

Kind of encouraging: These four last-place clubs showed enough in 2007 to move out of the basement in ‘08:
RAYS (they’re expected to drop the Devil this offseason)
Two steps forward: Outfielders Delmon Young and B. Upton started delivering on their considerable potential and, with Carl Crawford, give Tampa Bay the game’s best young outfield. Upton finally appears to have found a position, center field, where he can put his speed and plus arm to good use… Righthander Zack Greinke passed his late-season audition as a starter by keeping the aggressive approach he used as a reliever, when he dominated stretches with a high-90s fastball. With Bannister and Greinke to go with Gil Meche, the Royals have the foundation for a solid rotation. One step back: The powerless Royals finished with fewer home runs than they had in 2006, and they were last in the majors both seasons. The club can’t afford to pay for a big-time slugger, but even pitching-comes-first general manager Dayton Moore realizes the importance of finding a 25-homer hitter in the offseason. New closer Joakim Soria, 23, impressed scouts with his willingness to pitch inside. Watch this step: Billy Butler settled into the cleanup spot at the tender age of 21, but he needs to become a competent first baseman.

Lower lending rates cheer home loan borrowers
Economic Times - Oct 1, 2007
“The lowering of rates would lure
fresh borrowers when they have additional flow of cash in hand,” he said. Although banks and other
housing finance players have chosen the festive season to push their home loan
products, industry observers say that the sluggish home loan growth since April
has prompted them to go the extra mile to mobilise new home loan customers. The
banks’ home loan books have grown less than 5%, as opposed to 25-30 %
growth seen in the last few years. Interestingly, ICICI Bank has
so far kept its home loan rates unchanged. The country’s largest housing
finance company HDFC, announced the `special’ 10. 50% rate for new
customers willing to avail of home loans at the floating rate of interest. The
offer is valid all loans disbursed on or before October 31, 2007.
