made F-16 fighters. But building an integrated defense industry takes time and industry observers said Taiwan is still in its infancy. As a case in point, the home-grown IDFs now in service encountered numerous problems in their development, with critics joking that the IDF acronym stands for "I Don’t Fly". Building a domestic production base has taken on added importance for Taiwan, where opposition parties have blocked a multi-billion-dollar budget to buy a package of weapons offered by the United States since 2001. That delay has added to frustration in Washington over the China baiting rhetoric of Taiwan’s independence-leaning president, Chen Shui-bian, and it has become increasingly reluctant to sign off on additional requests. "Taiwan needs to maintain an indigenous defense manufacturing base," said Wendell Minnick, U.

Greek fires affecting political landscape
Taipei Times - Aug 30, 2007
Past forest fires have indeed been set by arsonists, often property owners wanting to develop land set aside as forest. And without doubt, New Democracy’s suggestions dovetailed with conspiracy theories mouthed by many Greeks, in a political culture full of conspiracy. Some speculated that it might be the work of Greece’s age-old nemesis Turkey or a home-grown, or possibly even foreign, terrorist group. One man in the hard-hit western Peloponnesian peninsula even suggested that it was a conspiracy between the government and makers of particle board for cheap wood. HELP FROM NATURE
Meanwhile, improved weather conditions yesterday helped thousands of firefighters, including hundreds from neighboring countries, bring under control dozens of fires. Hundreds of people who lost homes, property, farms and livestock crowded into banks in southern Greece to receive up to 13,000 euros (US$18,000) in aid promised immediately by the government. The fire department said at least two fires were burning out of control near the northern border with Albania, while on the hard-struck island of Evia, north of Athens, all fires were under control.

Namibia: NSHR Warns of ‘Plan’ to Return Nujoma to Power

"It is therefore our reading that President Pohamba used the opportunity of Heroes' Day to bring home the same message about the internal divisions and squabbles within his ruling party. He only used our ICC submission as a scarecrow, apparently in order to instil fear in the hearts of the people and to make his point regarding such divisions and squabbles," Ya Nangoloh said. "Had he been really concerned about our ICC submission, Mr Pohamba would have told the nation that he had since received an offer from NSHR urging him to institute a home-grown transitional justice and national reconciliation process, in exchange for the withdrawal by us of the ICC submission. "Ya Nangoloh claimed that President Pohamba had deliberately kept quiet about the NSHR offer "in order to advance his campaign for Nujoma to return to power as Namibian President, come the 2009 elections. "We are, therefore, not at all surprised at the suggestions that criticism of one person, who has supposedly no ambition to return to power, would plunge this country into a conflagration of conflict and instability. This is déjà vu!" Ya Nangoloh claimed that attempts to bring back Nujoma as President held real potential of disrupting peace and stability. "Because this means that our Constitution will again be amended to ensure Nujoma's return.

“It is a film that, in terms of emotive and visual power, is greater than some of the major films of many acclaimed directors. ”Previous winners of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival have included Vera Drake, Brokeback Mountain and Belle de Jour, so there is much reason to believe that this film marks an increasingly upward turn in the health of British cinema. With a plethora of genuinely talented young actors and actresses finally stepping into the shoes of some our trusted greats, it genuinely feels as though home-grown films are growing in depth and stature. Last year, Dame Helen Mirren scooped the best actress award at Venice for her role in The Queen, for which Peter Morgan won best screenplay. And Atonement star James McAvoy is no stranger to the furore created by certain films on the festival and award circuit, having co-starred in last year’s award-winning The Last King of Scotland, about Idi Amin, for which he gained a Bafta nomination. McAvoy has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame since he first starred in the Channel 4 cult comedy series Shameless. Since then he has starred in a number of films, including Bright Young Things, Inside, I’m Dancing, The Chronicles of Narnia and Starter for Ten, showing his incredibly diverse talent.
