Botswana: BA ISAGO Develops Home Grown Courses
AllAfrica.com – Aug 27, 2007
Mike Bradley, the BA ISAGO In-service and Corporate Training Coordinator has said their courses were developed in Botswana, based on the needs of the citizens. He indicated that the courses would save employees and employers' time and money instead of using external institutions for courses, which are not contextualised to Botswana. He explained that the process started with the development of a certificate in court administration course from which students graduated in July this year.

Also, the first two goals were scored by Colorado high school graduates. Throughout the game, the Rapids possessed the ball well, as evidenced by Terry Cooke taking 13 corner kicks – one away from tying the MLS single game record.

National involvementPersonally, I oppose Asia Energy’s proposal, mainly from financial aspect because I have always believed Bangladesh is not getting fair financial return in the deal. After seeing the German experience, I realized what was missing from the Phulbari proposal — it excluded Bangladesh’s ownership. Indeed, successful mining companies like RWE or Tata are home-grown. Why can’t we have a policy regime to encourage a home-grown company in which private companies may participate, but not hold the ownership of the resources? Let us learn from the experience of Coal India, the world’s largest coal producer — which used to be a local private company that was nationalised in 1973 and then in the early nineties saw private involvement again. I strongly believe that giving Phulbari away to Asia Energy just like that would be disastrous. If Phulbari zone is awarded to any coal mining company for execution, Bangladesh must be the large stakeholder in this deal. As a nation, we have the sovereign right to cancel or modify any deal to suit our national interest.
New China law changes rules for foreign business
Channel News Asia – Aug 27, 2007
The law will require a national security investigation as well as anti-monopoly checks into foreign companies that are planning to merge with or take over Chinese enterprises. Analysts say the new measures, which state media say are due to be approved this week, have grown out of fears that the increasing muscle of foreign firms is putting the squeeze on home-grown companies. But they are also the product of a booming economy whose biggest problem now is trying to get money flowing out of the country — not coming in. “China isn’t desperate for foreign investment anymore,” said Chen Xingdong, chief Chinese economist with BNP Paribas Securities in Beijing. “Some foreign mergers and acquisitions have added competitive pressure on local companies, so a policy change is necessary,” he told AFP. China has long signalled growing anxiety about the expanding power of foreign enterprises at home, especially since the country joined the World Trade Organisation in 2001.

Most impressive: 14 of the 25 players on their active roster are home grown, and 6 of 8 everyday players. It is a surprising fact for a 74-57 team that they have given up more runs than they have scored. This is largely because when they lose, time-and-time again it is by blowout. But then they win one run games like a seasoned, veteran club. Closer Jose Valverde walks the tightrope night after night but has blown just 6 of 46 chances… Randy has a new personality in AZ now: accessible and even friendly to the media, counseling young players. He is hardly a Luis Gonzales, but for Randy these are great strides. Why? I think he has a new appreciation of his gifts and records at age 43, has the NY fling out of his system and now wants to reach the 300 victory plateau and HOF induction with a reputation as a great teammate that passed something along to younger players. Yesterday he shut down the best team in baseball, and is 4-0, 1. 80 in his last 5 starts (would have been 5-0 except bullpen blew one).
