PFA want home-grown talent for England
Telegraph.co.uk – Jul 12, 2007
Since the Academy system began, only 120 English players from academies made debuts in the Premier League, while 617 overseas players made debuts in the top flight in the same period. The report says: “The bottom line is a very simple one.
American soccer hopes to bank it with Beckham
USA Today – Jul 12, 2007
“Signing Beckham was a no-brainer from a league perspective because you get a top player and his celebrity wife in one package, which just gets soccer into the mainstream media,” he says. “But my question is what now?”
Becks just part of growth plan
MLS’s Garber says Beckham will spur an expansion of a league that has long been proud of its modest salaries, stadiums and ticket prices. “The mission with the MLS has always been slow and conservative growth, based largely on home-grown players,” Garber says. He contrasts the league’s approach with the rise and spectacular fall of the North American Soccer League in the 1970s. For a time, that league was fueled by an array of foreign stars, including Brazil’s Pele and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer. Garber says it’s time for the 13-team MLS to grow, specifically by three franchises by 2010. He cites the recent signings of Mexican superstar Cuauhtemoc Blanco to the Chicago Fire and Colombian international Juan Pablo Angel to the New York Red Bulls as proof “we will see more and more higher-paid international stars here.
Increasing number of residents are growing their own produce
Freeport News – The Freeport News – Jul 12, 2007
NANCOO-RUSSELL
Freeport News Reporter. Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture say they are noticing an increase in persons growing their own produce, whether for their own use or for commercial sale, and are encouraging persons to continue this trend and eventually become self-sufficient. Department of Agriculture Superintendent Harold Johnson said while it cannot be confirmed that the increasing trend is due to the rising food prices, a link could certainly be made. “We’ve seen a very large increase in people farming for themselves in their backyards. Bahamian residents are coming in here more and more to get advice from the Department about farming.
Mother and Child Breakfast Burrito
KVUE – KVUE (subscription) – Jul 12, 2007
Inspired by the Paul Simon song, “Mother and Child Reunion,” meaning a dish of chicken and eggs mixed together, along with the wonderful assortment of fresh home-grown vegetables, we present the ultimate breakfast-on-the-go (or lunch, or snack, or even dinner. ) In our version, we take home grown veggies – yellow, red and green bell peppers; carrots; mushrooms; and fresh spinach leaves and combine them with delicious scrambled farm fresh eggs, veggie-rich salsa (email me for my favorite homemade salsa recipe at patrick@hrmag. com ), free-range organic chicken and melting cheese all wrapped in a tortilla. Scramble eggs, and place on top of vegetables. Throw chicken and a little vegetable oil in the pan used to scramble eggs for a few minutes to heat through, and place on top of eggs.
Putt-putting along at Loch Lomond
BBC News – Jul 12, 2007
The weather and the fortunes of the home-grown golfers are notoriously hard to predict. Damp weather over the previous weeks has left the course soft, so precision with the irons is the name of the game. Heavy black clouds have been lurking over Glen Douglas, ready to do their worst should Monty and co fail to shine. Looking for a break in the mist, I was reminded of the Billy Connolly story, who said that whenever he brought his daughter back to Scotland from America, she would ask, “Daddy, why is the sky here so low?”
It does feel like the clouds are coming down to inspect you, but so far the rain has stayed away.
