Sharing his observations about prominent trends at BroadcastAsia this year, Mr Tan remarked: “Digital Convergence has taken a firmer foothold in the industry as there are more enabling technologies on the show floor this year that deliver on the promise. ” Convergence Technologies Takes Centre Stage With the blurring of lines between broadcast and communications, BroadcastAsia this year saw a greater display of enabling digital convergence technologies and more varied convergent applications. Home-grown company Innoxius Technologies showcased its next-generation DVB-H base station, which was a smaller and more compact version than its predecessor. The company’s showcase this year was centered on cellular and indoor DVB-H broadcasting technology. US-based Belden CDT International introduced its wireless solution that would provide users with coverage, capacity and mobility with zero latency. Panasonic Systems Asia Pacific showcased its handheld, high-definition, solid-state memory camcorder at BroadcastAsia this year.

Three Ivorian soldiers captured by the New Forces rebels two years ago were released during a closed-door ceremony on Tuesday attended by military commanders from both sides in the capital of the northern rebel zone, Bouake. Their release paves the way for the formation of a new national army, incorporating rebel troops, foreseen in a March peace deal signed by President Laurent Gbagbo and New Forces leader Guillaume Soro in the Burkinabe capital Ouagadougou. "It’s time, high time, to prepare ourselves for the work of rebuilding our country," General Philip Mangou, chief of staff of the Ivory Coast National Armed Forces (FANCI), said after the release of the prisoners. International Committee of the Red Cross officials observed the handover, which concluded a two-month process in which 60 rebels and 48 civilians have already been released.
University students ’struggle with maths’

Young people are struggling with their degree subject because they lack even basic numerical skills, it is claimed. Dr Christie Marr, head of the Mathematics Support Centre, based at St Andrews University, said that even the brightest students may need help. It follows fears by the Royal Society of Chemistry earlier this year that Britain’s economic stability was under threat because levels of basic skills among Chinese students far outstrip those of home-grown school-leavers. Dr Marr, an experienced maths lecturer who has also taught the subject in secondary schools, said: “We cannot assume a level playing field when it comes to a mathematical background.
