China gets support for home-grown encryption standard
America's Network – May 24, 2007
"A complete WAPI industry chain is already taking shape and it is set to prevail in China," said Jiang Shiping, chairman of the WAPI alliance, an industry group pushing the standard. Encryption software transforms messages into virtually unbreakable code in order to make sure the information does not wind up in the wrong hands, the AFP report said. China has been pushing hard for its own standards in a range of product categories including third-generation mobile phones, digital TV and home networking in a bid to leverage domestic firms and reduce reliance on foreign technologies, it added.

Facing the threat of terror at home
Christian Science Monitor – May 24, 2007
I’m just minutes away from where some of the men live who were arrested for allegedly plotting to kill at least 100 soldiers at Fort Dix in April. Although the plot was uncovered, authorities making the arrest believe that the threat of home-grown terrorist cells, not connected to but inspired by Al Qaeda, is a very real one. Although I think of myself as praying consistently about terrorism, I didn’t realize until reading the article and feeling the threat in my own backyard how much more I can do. So now I’m praying in a fresh way. The experience of a man in the Bible’s New Testament, Ananias, is helping me. He also had to pray about terrorism when a well-known terrorist, Saul, arrived in his town.

Is Lebanon facing a ‘new breed’ of Al Qaeda?
Christian Science Monitor – May 24, 2007
She adds that Fatah al-Islam is an example of the “new breed” of Al Qaeda, similar to Al Qaeda in Iraq, which was made famous by its first leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, before his death a year ago. “They are much more localized in aims and makeup like Al Qaeda in Iraq,” she says. Syria has denied any involvement with the group, arguing that it faces threats of its own from home-grown jihadi militants. There have been several shootouts and attacks in the past three years, including one on the US Embassy in Damascus, by suspected Islamic militants. “Our forces have been after them, even through Interpol,” Walid Muallem, Syria’s foreign minister, said earlier this week. “We reject this organization. It does not serve the Palestinian cause, and it is not after liberating Palestine.

Chery eyes foreign market
央视国际 – May 24, 2007
After driving off the production line in China’s eastern Anhui province, they will soon be seen on roads across China, Southeast Asia and North Africa. Chery has already made it big on the mainland – with a focus on low-cost rather than quality cars that have been a smash hit with first-time buyers. The nation’s largest home-grown car maker has its sights set on the vast U. and European markets. But to tap the fiercely competitive, but potentially lucrative markets in Europe and the U.

China’s home-grown TD-SCDMA standard could be available for commercial use as early as this autumn if the current round of testing is proven to be a success. The wireless 3G standard is being tested in ten cities until October. At the 2007 TD-SCDMA Summit held Wednesday, the industrial union confirmed that final tests will be carried out in ten cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Guangzhou. Users will then be able to apply for a number. The homegrown 3G standard, along with the international WCDMA and CDMA2000 standards have been undergoing testing since 2001.

Snap Judgment: Herald the Messiah, and ‘play ball’
Jerusalem Post – May 24, 2007
Throwing out the first pitch – and showing a surprisingly strong arm – was then-mayor Teddy Kollek, who told me that day: “The more new sports we bring to Israel, the better it will be for politicians – because then there will be more news reporting of sport than of politics. Teddy was wrong, of course – politics was then, and continues to be, the real sport of Israel. Also overconfident that day were the organizers, who confidently predicted that the little league would develop a whole generation of home-grown major league baseball talents. As it is, the new IBL will boast only a handful of Israeli-born or -raised players on its roster, almost all the children of American immigrants. One has to wonder whether a sport as tightly regulated and deliberately paced as baseball is really suitable for the Israeli national character. That the Japanese came to love baseball makes perfect sense; that your typical Sabra would have the patience to wait for a good pitch, and not argue just about every single call made by the umpire, requires a little seventh-inning stretch of the imagination. I ALSO have to add a note of skepticism as to what degree a professional baseball league “could help Americans bond with Israel,” as Krasna suggests.
