18–RED, Ripe And Luscious — strawberries are at their peak during this brief window between Easter and Mother’s Day. Their popularity continues well into summer when they’re often featured in red, white and blue Fourth of July desserts. Anyone fortunate enough to enjoy home-grown berries won’t eat them before June. The springtime strawberries decorating shortcakes, jazzing up fruit salads and pairing with rhubarb in jam come from California, said Randy DiSanti, produce buyer for Andrews Foodservice Systems. “California had a freeze in late December, early January that affected the crop. Most of the plants didn’t get hit real hard. We’re still waiting to see how they’ll be affected,” DiSanti said.
EUROPEAN UNION: Anti-terrorism policy lacks coherence

Similarly, individual member states have strengthened law-enforcement structures and agencies. However, the 'added European value' remains elusive: • Home-grown terrorism. Since the US-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, the EU has become a target for Islamist terrorists from third countries as well as home-grown ones. The 'detect and indict' approach has severe limitations with autonomous home-grown cells. • EU as facilitator. Primarily it will be up to member states to address problems of alienation and radicalisation. The EU can only facilitate transnational learning.

On another 22,000 kilometres of track trains will be forced tochug along at 120 kilometres per hour. Nevertheless by 2020, China hopes 13,000 kilometres of trackwill be able to handle its bullet trains. China’s vice minister of railways Hu Yadong lauded theachievement of what China has called its home-grown technologicalsuccess. “That length exceeds the total amount of rail lines capable ofaccommodating trains at that speed in nine European countries,”said Hu. “And raising the speed to 200 kilometres per hour on so muchtrack in only one move is also rare in the world. China, home to the globe’s fourth-largest economy, is keen toshow off the new bullet trains as evidence that it can develop itsown technology in key sectors, and is not simply where the worldcomes to assemble products. However, the trains are mainly built abroad on the basis oftechnology transfer agreements with industry heavy-hitters such asJapan’s Mitsubishi-Kawasaki, Canada’s Bombardier, German giantSiemens and France’s Alstom.

President Mugabe, who has been in power since 1980, marked the day with new threats against opposition forces he accuses of trying to topple his government on behalf of Zimbabwe’s former colonial master. During his speech, he accused the Zimbabwean opposition of trying to create a state of anarchy. He said he had no problem with a ‘legal, home-grown, peaceful and constructive political opposition,’ but said chief opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who says he was cheated of victory in presidential polls in 2002, was a ‘pathetic puppet’ of Britain and the US. Last month, a prayer meeting in Harare attended by opposition leaders and activists was broken up by police leaving two people dead. Scores of activists, including Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai, were arrested and assaulted in police custody. Southern African leaders have appointed South Africa President Thabo Mbeki to mediate between Mr Mugabe and the MDC party. Currently, Zimbabwe’s unemployment rate is 80%, inflation is nearing 2,000%, and 80% of their 13 million people are living below the poverty line.
