Guest commentary: Immokalee school restructuring: So much for ‘homegro…
Naples Daily News – Naples Daily News (subscription) – Mar 31, 2007
I am mystified as to why the district would want to start restructuring by placing such a major obstacle in these schools by choosing to start the next school year with the demoralized teachers who are left. Recently the district supplied me with pamphlets to give to my eighth-grade students that encouraged them to choose education as a major area of interest as they enter high school. According to the district, they wished to start a “Home Grown Teacher” program. As it turns out, the district already had at least one “Home Grown Teacher” who grew up in Immokalee, went off to college to earn her teaching certificate in mathematics, and returned to Immokalee to teach. She continued to teach for over 15 years. She had an exemplary record. Several principals came through Immokalee and they thought she was one of the best teachers with whom they had worked.

Kenya decries myriad conflicts ravaging Africa
People's Daily Online – Mar 31, 2007
Kenyan Vice President Moody Awori said it was time for leadership in the continent to formulate ways of intervening to incidences of conflict through home grown solution, noting that in the past Africa relied on external assistance. Opening a meeting of Ministers of Defense and Security from East African region in Nairobi, Awori lauded the seven nation regional bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development ( IGAD) for its success in steering the Eastern Africa Standby Brigade since its inception. He noted that the IGAD initiative is a clear manifestation of the commitment by members towards the maintenance of peace and security in the region. “I assure you of Kenya’s unreserved support, we shall not only continue to be an active participant in regional and international peace initiatives, but also remain a committed member of the Eastern Africa Standby Brigade,” Awori said. Defense and security ministers from Eastern Africa region are reviewing security progress in the region ravaged by conflicts, insecurity and poverty.

This isbig beef country. The region is also famous for its pork. Southerntourists have been known to head for the butcher’s home-grown porksausages before they’ve unpacked their hibiscus-print board shortsand those compulsory straw cowboy hats popularised by ElleMacpherson and James Packer’s first wife. So on the meat front, it came as some relief this week to learnthat Beef Week had evaded the final chop. Its demise this year -and that of its chief symbol, the Beef Queen – was premature. Nextyear, say its organisers, it will be bigger and better than ever. ASydney consulting firm has been called in to create “a newdirection” for the event.
