A More Islamic Islam
Washington Post – Mar 17, 2007
So there is now freedom in Iran. Saddam, for another example. Well, not a home-grown revolution, but there is now potential for one, if not more. So, freedom is on the way there, too. There are already plenty of places where Sharia law holds sway, so those places are also free, right? And you appear to equate the return of the imperialists with the oil export business. I*m a little weak on that history, but I believe that got its start with the British in the 30s, and was expanded as we began to plan for our oil production to peak. I have a bit of personal knowledge about that era as my father was working for an outfit called Zapata Offshore Oil Company in the late 50s through the mid 60s, and spent much of his time selling drilling rigs and services to companies working in the Persian Gulf.

Good Will Must Be One of Our Anti-Terror Tools
Magic City Morning Star – Mar 17, 2007
That lesson was underscored at a recent hearing of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, where I serve as ranking member. Technology and active counter-measures are vital defenses against foreign terrorists who plan attacks against us. But we also need to deal with the threat of home-grown terrorists – think of Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City federal-building bombing, or the recent discovery of a group of Islamic extremists in California who were radicalized while in prison. Whether fostered by extremist recruiters or by self-study of extremist literature and Internet sites, radicalization produces hate-filled individuals and groups bent on violence. A Senate hearing that I led last year showed that our prisons, in particular, are fertile ground for this activity. Whether they operate in prisons, in extremist-led mosques, or on Internet sites, the purveyors of hate are trying to raise a new generation of terrorists in our midst. This is not, I emphasize, a problem confined to Muslims.

“Aaron has worked hard. He has battled some adversity on the field and battled huge adversity off the field. He is one of ours, he is home grown. I told him today that I was proud to give him the ball. ”
Cook, 28, had his first full season in the major leagues last year. He had been sidelined with blood clots in his lungs and was out of the game from August 2004 to August 2005. “It was day to day when I was coming back from the blood clots,” Cook said.

Irish eyes smiling after World Cup debut
Jamaica Observer – Mar 17, 2007
“What a great result!”Bray was instrumental in the outcome with his unbeaten century setting up Ireland’s competitive total of 221 for nine off 50 overs. “Just to be a part of an experience like this in the World Cup, you have to say that this is pretty much up there with the best of them,” he said. The Ireland squad is very much home-grown, but skipper Johnston, Bray and new ball spearhead Dave Langford-Smith are three Irish-qualified Australians. “We’re all actually married to Irish women and two of us have children as well,” Bray said. “But I’ve been in Ireland for 10 years and Trent and Dave have been over five or six years so that’s how we qualified. ”
Bray and Johnston have been mates since they played age-group cricket throughout the New South Wales system in Sydney, where Langford-Smith also earned his stripes in the tough grade competitions. All-rounder Andre Botha, born in Johannesburg, lends more diversity to the squad.

The awe is long gone, and the shock only gets worse
Jamaica Observer – Mar 17, 2007
Then it was the turn of what is perhaps the greatest empire the world has ever seen – the British. They took over the disparate factions in that ancient land, and after employing their own version of shock and awe, were repaid in kind. A revolution ended Britain’s hold in 1958, and now it was the turn of home-grown shockers and awe-imposers. The Ba’athist Party took over from the dissolute satraps the British had installed, and a young operative whose only ideology was how to gain and retain power soon emerged as the top dog. It was Saddam Hussein who introduced a modern generation of Iraqis, Iranians, Kurds and Kuwaitis to shock and awe. He attacked Iran with his not inconsequential military, but after eight years the exercise proved to be a disaster for both nations, which bled population, resources and cash until, totally exhausted, they were forced to call a halt. But Saddam wasn’t satisfied, and attacked his southern neighbour, Kuwait, on the spurious claim that it was stealing Iraq’s oil by drilling its oil-wells sideways.

Bra Boys box office bonanza

article-tools –> By Sarrah Le Marquand March 17, 2007 12:00am CONTROVERSIAL feature film Bra Boys set a record within hours of opening on Thursday, ringing up the best ever opening day box-office takings for an Australian documentary. With ticket sales amounting to $90,000 in its first day, Bra Boys was only outperformed by the big-budget overseas productions Wild Hogs and Hot Fuzz – which played on more than five times the number of screens. Buoyed by the success of the home-grown documentary – which follows the turbulent lives of the Abberton brothers and their surfing gang in Maroubra – Hopscotch Films will now distribute Bra Boys more widely. "It’s wonderful the public has embraced a story about an Australian way of life," Hopscotch director Troy Lum said. "It has no Hollywood stars or special effects but the film is an exciting ride. "
Narrated by Oscar winner Russell Crowe and directed by Sunny Abberton, Bra Boys doesn’t shy away from the gang’s brushes with the law. The Bra Boys courted controversy long before Sunny decided to shoot the documentary, but events took an unexpectedly violent turn when Jai Abberton was charged with the murder of standover man Tony Hines six months after shooting began.

Does ‘the West’ still exist?
BBC News – Mar 17, 2007

But neither gave up America’s right to go it alone and use military muscle to intervene when it suited them. It was clear the “war on terrorism” is still just that, a war with an external enemy, to be vanquished at any price. So different from the view in Europe, where terrorism can be home-grown, and if you use force too recklessly, you risk converting new recruits to the terrorist cause. Transatlantic split

“Just cut us some slack,” shot back the US official addressing the dinner when one former general rose to his feet to suggest that holding prisoners for years in Guantanamo Bay, or using secret CIA jails to extract intelligence might be counterproductive. “We are dealing with a different kind of insurgency here,” said the American testily, “and we need to win. ”

“I was trying to be helpful,” said the old soldier with studied politeness. “If you would agree, instead of trying to justify the unjustifiable, the US would be a better place.
