The security threat is at its highest level since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States and the planning of attacks against British targets will increase further in 2007, the "Extremist Threat Assessment" document said, according to the newspaper. "The scale of al Qaeda’s ambitions towards attacking the UK and the number of UK extremists prepared to participate in attacks are even greater than we had previously judged," the Sunday Telegraph quoted the document as saying. Britain suffered its worst peacetime attack in July 2005 when four British Islamists blew themselves up on London’s transport network, killing 52 commuters and wounding hundreds.

The US domestic audience for tonight’s show is expected be around 45 million. In Britain, where it will be screened after midnight on Sky, a few hundred thousand (rather more than usual, thanks to the possibility of Helen Mirren winning Best Actress) will watch. Movie-mad India is in a sulk over Hollywood’s supposed condescension to its home-grown films, and now prefers its own awards ceremony. Most of continental Europe will be asleep, South America isn’t deeply interested, and Africa can only muster one television set for every 395 people. Only with arm-twisting does Leslie Unger, publicity director for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which organises the awards, admit that the cherished billion figure “probably lacks veracity”.
