Fashion Shows: New York v London
The Independent – Independent – Feb 18, 2007
Michael Roberts, Vanity Fair’s fashion director, believes things will change. “London has always been very cyclical: there is a high point followed by a slump and we are now seeing the city on the rise again,” he said. Last season Italian designer Giorgio Armani’s one-off transatlantic switch to London overshadowed all home-grown designers with his fashion and music extravaganza. British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman said talks were under way for another international fashion star to show in London in the autumn, and that big names such as Armani and Jacobs were just as important as home-grown talent. “The idea that only home-grown designers show in each city is really an old-fashioned notion,” said Ms Shulman. “Having international designers here does nothing but good. “New YorkTHE EDITOR: Anna WintourThe US ‘Vogue’ editor was a regular on New York fashion week’s front row to see and be seen at many of the shows, including Donna Karan and Marc Jacobs.

In reality, of course, the Germans did not revolt. And this year, as the country faces a series of uncomfortable anniversaries, they are confronted with the issue again. Did the state over-react? How do you deal with home-grown terrorists? First, it seems you have to overcome the romantic mythology surrounding the young, demonically attractive gang who ducked and dived like Teutonic Bonnies and Clydes. German teen- agers, with unassuming pride, still wear T-shirts bearing the logo of the gang which killed 34 people during its campaign: a red Communist star with Kalashnikov. Terror chic has made it on to German catwalks. Ms Mohnhaupt, regarded as the leader of the RAF’s second generation, has never expressed remorse, yet as soon as a website for her went live last month, the offers of support flooded in. “I want to give her a house in the countryside and look after her,” wrote one.

He could of returned in August but the Nationals put him on the shelf for the rest of the season,to their credit. John is coming into 2007 healthy and rested,if he can gain his 2005 form I think you will see bigger and better things to come from him. Taylor Tankersley (Marlins)The Marlins are simply amazing the way they keep on bringing home grown quality talent to the Majors, the list goes on and on. The Tank is another one of those products. When they do lunch? It’s usually not in the blandlands of the San Fernando Valley, a few miles from where they grew up in Canoga Park. Cate Blanchett? Eddie Murphy? We don’t make them for Cheesecake Factory people, but that’s exactly where Jackie Earle Haley wants to eat. He’s going to have that Hawaiian pizza, the one with pineapples and bacon… It can do things to you, especially a kid. “He remembers buying his family a swimming pool. Ten years later, Haley was back home living with Mom, broke, delivering pizzas, saying he hoped the person who answered the door wouldn’t recognize him, but mostly hoping for a decent tip. “It took me years and years and years to get where I am,” he says. Haley speaks clearly and holds your eye. Eating his own pizza now.

I have always had a crush on the countryside. I stare wistfully from train windows at pastoral scenes. I dream that one day my wife, my daughter and I will nestle by real fires and eat salads made from home-grown beetroot and hawthorn leaves. My daughter will grow up unafraid of mud and woodland creatures. What fun we’ll have, wading in brooks and pointing at frogs. But then I worry that she will be a native countrysider, while I will only be an immigrant. It could be a barrier between us.
