But when it comes time to choose a college, most go elsewhere. Senior Casey Nash, a virtual scoring machine for OSU, is one of the rare exceptions. The group could do no wrong with popular tunes such as Searching, No Stranger To Love, and Dizzy Gillespie’s A Night In Tunisia but it was the lively stage act and solos by band members such as drummer Lee Pearson and saxophonist Ray Gaskins that figuratively raised the roof of the Half Moon Hotel
The amazing vocals also added spice to the slow numbers while Ayers worked wonders on his vibraphone, describing the event as “a great festival of music with a great positive vibe”. Strings gave a good account of themselves. The five-member band, self-described as the newest sound in Afro-Caribbean music with a distinct Cuban flavour with a mix of reggae, were determined to make their mark. Now working on their first album, Island Follies, they delighted the audience with songs such as their original Brasilenia and covers such as Bill Withers’ Ain’t No Sunshine while showing a mastery of their instruments. Not to be outdone, home-grown act Della Manley was her usual sultry self, delivering a slew of favourites from Ashes On The Window Sill including the self-titled track and the thought-provoking City Lights. Plus gems from her newest project, Barbican Square including the well-known I Know. And I would add that many Canadian retailers have not been that strong on customer service
