Shanghai is working on new measures to help create more reputable home grown export brands. One of the measures include sitting up a special fund. According to Shanghai’s foreign trade authority, the fund will be used to subsidize exporters which are building their own brands in overseas markets. The funds to support small and medium sized companies will be injected into firms which have their own intellectual property rights, and with the potential to be developed into recognized brands.

Changes for Microsoft and Apple
BBC News – Dec 28, 2006
“There is pent-up demand for its useablity,” he said. Rival to YouTube

Microsoft may have beaten Sony and Nintendo in the race to bring out next-generation consoles but in the sphere of music it is lagging well behind Apple. To redress this, Microsoft offered its Zune music player to the world – or, at least the US – in the autumn. The player was met with mixed reviews. Critics admired its hard-wearing rubberised shell, large screen and ability to swap music wirelessly with other Zunes. They were less impressed by its overall functionality and the limitations on sharing songs. Most saw potential but did not think it was going to seriously impact iPod sales in the near future… In September it launched a rival to YouTube. Soapbox will form part of MSN video. It is hoped it will revitalise its home-grown user-generated content – while YouTube has 34m visitors each month, and MySpace attracts 17. 9m, MSN Video is getting just 12m. MSN Video was once the most popular video site until fans of user-generated content propelled YouTube, MySpace and Google past Microsoft. 2006 saw the bedding down of Windows and Office Live. Announced at the tail-end of last year it was the software giant’s push into online software services, in what was seen as a move to counter rivals like Google and Yahoo.

Now who’s the bigot?
Roanoke Times – Dec 28, 2006

But what does this have to do with Ellison, you ask? This: The man who once went by the name Keith X Ellison has never renounced his affiliation with the most hate-driven organization in America. To this day, he is an enthusiastic supporter of Farrakhan, his grossly malevolent pronouncements and the principles upon which the Nation of Islam stands. Ellison is a home-grown radical Muslim. And he’s soon to be a member of Congress. Goode focused on this issue, he’d have gone on record as having brought up a subject that few people in this country seem to want to address but will, at some point, need to. Having dragged the immigration issue into the discussion, though, Goode has brought upon himself an endless string of denunciations.

Battling anti-American propaganda ‘a long struggle’
Stockton Record – Dec 28, 2006
Again, I wonder if this approach is a Cold War relic. Following the British bombings two summers ago, the British public expressed shock that “home grown” young Muslim men could turn on their fellow countrymen. The reason is that they did not see Britain as their country, but heaven as their destination and jihad as their vehicle for getting there. Hughes also speaks of a coming “major Western Hemisphere initiative” to do more and communicate more with Latin American countries. She says the Bush administration has nearly doubled U.

DC United details Youth Development program
OurSports Central – OurSports Central (press release) – Dec 28, 2006
“Major League Soccer has made a serious commitment to Youth Development with its new initiative starting in 2007 as all MLS teams are to have at least two youth teams to train and compete year-round. MLS has now created an opportunity for young soccer players to have the ability to develop as a player through their MLS Youth Club team. Eventually, after meeting certain requirements, it would then be possible to sign a professional contract with that club, through the Home Grown Player System, without having to go through the draft. This is a big step forward in youth development for this country and I am very excited to be a part of it. Major League Soccer last month announced details of its new Youth Development Initiative, a system designed to give young players a chance to train with and play for D.
