Grow Yer Own: SF Recreation & Parks’ Community Gardens
WorldChanging – Dec 23, 2006
Educational workshops and demonstration programs related to urban gardening and composting are offered by an independent organization called Garden for the Environment, which receives support from the City of San Francisco Department of Environment. Most of the educational programs take place at the 7th and Lawton community garden in the Sunset and are free and open to the public. If all of these eco-friendly, low-cost, bringing-neighbors-together incentives aren’t enough to convince you, consider the best reason to get a community garden plot and “Grow Yer Own€? – it tastes better! There’s nothing like the taste of a fresh home-grown tomato, just picked off the vine. Or the incredible flavorful sweetness of a carrot from your own garden. Most of us would agree that store-bought produce can’t come close to matching the freshness and flavor of home-grown veggies.

Shenzhen starts regional airline
chinadaily.com.cn – Dec 23, 2006
Its goal is to
become China’s largest regional carrier with 160 to 200 feeder jets, each having
50 to 90 seats. Ornstein told China Daily that he was “very interested in using regional jets
manufactured in China” to serve the expansion. China’s home-grown ARJ 21, which seats 70 to 100 passengers, will enter
commercial service in 2009. The aircraft is manufactured by China Aviation
Industry Corp I (AVIC I). The company plans to develop a new turboprop aircraft
with 35 to 70 seats to replace the 50-seat MA60, or Xinzhou 60, launched in the
1990s. China also produces the 50-seat ERJ 145 in Harbin, Northeast China’s
Heilongjiang Province, at a joint venture between AVIC II and Embraer. “Developing regional aviation business will have a big impact on our goal to
become an aviation group,” said Zhao Xiang, chairman of Shenzhen Airlines.

Religion: More harm than good
news24.com – Dec 23, 2006
Eighty-two percent of the 1 006 adults questioned for the left-leaning newspaper in the run up to Christmas said they saw religion as a cause of division and tension between people compared to 16% who disagreed. At a time when Britain's multi-cultural, multi-faith model, their outward symbols and culture are under the microscope after last year's home-grown Islamist extremist suicide bombings, 63% said they were not religious. Some 33% said they were religious. Older people and women were the most likely to believe in a god: 37% of women said they were religious compared to 29% of men. But there was still good news for Christian leaders who complain that the true meaning of Christmas is being increasingly eroded by the forces of consumerism and consumption. Fifty-four percent of Christians questioned said they planned to attend a religious service over the festive period.
