Nebraska wins title in front of record-breaking crowd – College Sports
ESPN – Dec 17, 2006
Club and high school programs draw big numbers. Nebraska produces almost twice the number of Division I volleyball players as California per capita. Seven of the 12 players on this year’s Nebraska roster are home-grown, as are almost half of the school’s record 27 All-Americans. Larson, a multi-talented sophomore, this year became the latest to join that list. Five years ago, Larson was a high school sophomore in tiny Hooper, Neb. , who was already committed to the Cornhuskers. That’s when Omaha was awarded the chance to host the 2006 volleyball final four.

ReutersWorld record holder China’s Liu Xiang holds his national flag as he celebrates after winning the men’s 110m hurdles final during the 15th Asian Games in Doha on December 12. DOHA (Reuters):
The Chinese not only took home the most gold medals for a seventh successive Asian Games from Doha, they took the flag and torch of the continental gathering too. With the next Summer Olympics in Beijing in 2008 and the 16th Asian Games taking place in the southern city of Guangzhou in 2010, the next four-year cycle in Asian sport will have a distinctly Chinese flavour. Their athletes, however, do not seem to need the advantage of performing on home soil after winning 165 of the 428 gold medals in Doha, 15 more than in Pusan in 2002. Two thirds of the delegation had never competed at a major Games and still China swept the diving pool, won six of seven golds in table tennis, 27 of 44 in shooting, 11 in gymnastics as well as making inroads into new sports with a bronze in rugby sevens. The Beijing Olympic are just 20 months away, however, and there will be no complacency… 15 seconds, well outside the world record 12. 88 he ran this year. African imports ruled the track for Bahrain and Qatar while Saudi Arabia’s John Smith-trained athletics team grabbed five golds to prove it was possible to develop home-grown talent in the Gulf. html” >More

Lynn Howells, the Edinburgh coach, says a fragmented season makes him…
Times Online – Dec 17, 2006
Both Howells and the men who hired him introduced themselves to their new audience with airy plans to keep Edinburgh Scottish and, by extension, to keep Scotland Edinburgh, with the bulk of the national team being drawn from their ranks as has been the case since Frank Hadden went upstairs at Murrayfield. The second half of this plan will, undoubtedly, continue untroubled, but the first has already been deemed unworkable. Although Howells will not rule out moving for home-grown players whose contracts expire at Glasgow and the Reivers in the summer, the two-team structure he envisages presiding over this time next year will open up his options far more than it will Hadden’s. Just as it should be. The three signings he has made so far, lock Chris Bentley, scrum-half John Senio, and back-three man Lucio Lopez Fleming, none of whom is Scottish qualified, have taken the first seats in what Howells anticipates will become a fairly meaty bench squad. Topped up with Scots whose position at either extreme of the age spectrum will not see them troubled with international call-ups, this “second team” will be ready and waiting for the coach to roll out when Hadden makes his regular cull.

Curbishley prepares for the long haul
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 17, 2006
“I even had butterflies on Monday afternoon when we started to approach him to see if he wanted to come, because he was really the man I wanted. “He’s a West Ham man. I’ve always felt that if you want to have success in football you need as many home-grown players as possible and we have two guys now, the manager and the assistant manager [Mervyn Day], who grew up here and I think their first love was West Ham. “Magnusson emphasises the point by banging his heart with a clenched fist, though he says his admiration of Curbishley goes beyond his claret-and-blue credentials. His mind was made up after seeking the opinion of Charlton defender and fellow Icelander Hermann Hreidarsson. “Hermann said that as soon as Alan came into the room all the players respected him, and they respected his decisions. “Magnusson was correct not to assume that Curbishley would simply sign on the dotted line, however.
