Green gifts, or are they?
San Francisco Chronicle – Dec 16, 2006
But then they’re trucking it to the port (probably in a diesel-belching truck that couldn’t pass a smog test) and shipping it to an American port (or, worse, jetting it into an airport), from which it is trucked to a distribution center and then to the Cost-Plus store, where I buy it and then drive 20 miles home. So, if Al Gore is correct, another iceberg melts. And it’s my fault for wanting to do home-grown gifts this Christmas. E-mail Home&Garden Editor Lynette Evans at. Brilliant inventor of tree-grown money
Guardian Unlimited – Dec 16, 2006
As is the tradition, his enemies tended to be on his own side. Impossible to quote his sketches, since they depended on a slow build-up to a usually hilarious conclusion, though I loved the moment when he discovered that the Labour leftwinger Tom Litterick had studied economics at Dundee. “Ah, Dundee, home of the celebrated ‘tree-grown’ theory of money. ” It is customary at these times to refer to a “brave struggle against cancer”. But his was really a cheerful struggle. I have never known anyone so optimistic, so good-humoured, so positive and so funny, right up to the very end. The only time I met Mohamed Al Fayed was during a party at Harrods to launch the new version of Punch.
KARACHI: Task force against dengue soon
Pakistan Dawn – Dec 16, 2006
Experts believe that a harsh chilly December has proved to be a blessing for Karachiites as it has killed all the dengue virus carrying mosquitoes but the threat still exists in the form of larvae they left in hibernation that could give birth to these mosquitoes once weather turns hot. The real task for authorities is to locate those breeding spots and destroy them before April. More fumigation drives are planned to be carried out during four cold months but what bothers both the health authorities and CDGK is the fact that this mosquito is home-grown and in a city like Karachi, the menace could not be effectively checked without massive public involvement in the exercise. He said media would be involved for effective mass awareness campaign about dengue. People would be advised to keep their houses clean, water reservoirs covered and carry out continuous sprays to destroy the deadly stuff. com Banner Code ————– –>.
Call for inclusive society to foil radicals
The Age – Dec 16, 2006
The report, published on the Immigration Department’s websiteyesterday, lists proposals by the now-defunct Muslim CommunityReference Group and the Government’s response to each. Issues include extremism — relabelled “rigid thinking”— alienation, home-grown clerics, education, youth, women, unemployment and integration. The report says Muslims have a responsibility to combatterrorism, but it is also important to recognise that most Muslimsare not terrorists. It says a more inclusive Australia is vital to combat “rigid andanti-social thinking” and makes nearly 50 proposals, of which theGovernment says 42 have begun. Efforts to reduce the appeal of radicalism include volunteeringand leadership programs. But the report warns that converts toIslam can feel isolated from both Muslim and non-Muslimcommunities, which makes them vulnerable to radicals.
Motown marraiges are made to last
Economic Times – Dec 16, 2006
The 80s and 90s were peppered
with many such unions — like the government of India-Suzuki, Premier-Fiat,
Premier-Nissan, Allwyn-Nissan, Hindujas-Iveco, Mahindra-Ford, GM-HM,
Toyota-Kirloskar, Honda-Siel — but only a handful have survived. The new wave of companies that came in like Hyundai and Daewoo chose
to go it alone, while Indian partners held a small notional stake in the case of
Honda and Toyota. Things have changed a lot since then and more
meaningful relationships are being formed between foreign companies and their
Indian partners. This is more so because India as a market has evolved much in
the last decade and MNC carmakers are a lot more excited about the prospect of
having a presence here.
