She is one of several prominent local athletes who have chosen to play collegiately close to home. One Algerian was killed and several Westerners wounded. Officials working for the foreign companies helping produce oil and gas, Algeria’s economic mainstay, say there is no risk they will pull out or reduce their activities. Confidence in the security services, experienced after 14 years fighting a home-grown Islamist insurgency, remains robust. But foreign businessmen are taking a fresh look at security strategies after the first attack on Westerners in years. "This is an important reminder to foreign investors of the need to take security very, very seriously in Algeria," said Gavin Proudley of UK-based Quest, a business consultancy. "This is a wake-up call, to realise that even in Algeria risks are still present even if they are not day to day," said Sarah Meyer of Control Risks consultants. Foreign and Algerian residents were startled by the attackers’ ability to evade heavy security, and plan and execute a reasonably complex attack before vanishing into surrounding forests and farms.

A spokesperson here says there is no confirmation on that number and therefore no breakdown on how many home grown heads will roll. As of late last week, there was a rather deep slashing at Hollywood Reporter, where 10 people were given the ax. In the midsummer takeover by the private equity partners, Robert Krakoff, the one-time head of Cahners and Advanstar, replaced Michael Marchesano as the president and CEO of VNU Business Media in the U. David Calhoun, a former General Electric executive, is heading up the worldwide operations.
