Iran’s technology revolution
OpEdNews – Nov 25, 2006
He interviewed political dissidents and people who’d been jailed by the Iranian regime and demonstrated how opposition views and newspapers were disappearing under the current president, Ahmadinejad. But he also showed the obsession of younger Iranians with the internet and western culture. They see American movies, dance to rap music and hold mixed sex parties at underground locations. The Iranian regime is obsessed with censorship and it shuts down numerous internet sites and spends lots of energy spying on its people. They say that good things are either illegal, immoral or fattening. Iranians search for fun in breaking such prohibitions and doing naughty things in secret. “We used to drink in public and pray at home… This was made possible by the skyrocketing oil prices. Most Iranians believed that their nuclear program was peaceful in nature and that’s why they supported it. It was a matter of national pride to them to develop a home grown technology. Nuclear research sites are scattered all over the country and enrichment facilities have become numerous. Ahmadinejad announced last week that 30,000 uranium enrichment centrifuges will be installed within the next year. He also brokered peace between Syria and Iraq thereby making a goodwill gesture to the American negotiator indicating that Iran has something to offer in the way of stabilizing Iraq. Koppel’s documentary closed by stating that the US had to negotiate with Iran over the Iraq issue, but at the same time it has to keep its military options open.

Def Wish Cast

It was an instant classic and the first real album from an
Australian hip hop crew. With this The Cast started getting support acts for international artists such
as the Beastie Boys, Helmet, Young Black Teenagers and Wrecks n’ Effect. Music in this country and the world will always have never ending benchmarks set by Def Wish Cast
that are the epitome when it comes to representing all forms of universal hip hop. The Cast have laid
many a foundation with their highly individual, ‘home-grown’ sound that actually had a lot to do with
the Australian accent being prominent in our MC’s today and setting up a standard in what we now
know as Australian hip hop. Today the home grown scene has evolved and DWC are back; ready to represent the people and

Open and shut case for local contingent
MyTown Bay of Plenty – Nov 25, 2006
New Zealand just can’t sustain paying sizeable appearance fees and multi-million dollar prize pools these days. And in the chase for the unsustainable, New Zealand Golf has taken its eyes off the main ingredients for success _ a golf course worth playing on, good money and quality home-grown players. Last week’s Australian Open was a great success for those three reasons, helped in no small part that their “home-grown” talent included some of the best players in the world. We don’t have that luxury but I’d love to see more New Zealanders playing in the Open, even at the expense of the profile of the event. It must be frustrating for the likes of Greg Turner and Cambo, who have been vocally pushing the case of our younger players, that very few locals even have a chance to play in the Open field and measure themselves against the best. It may be unlikely but the sight I’d most like to see would be Brad Iles, Josh Geary and Mark Brown coming down the 18th fairway tied for the lead. Maybe then, the powers that be would realise we have young men with big dreams who can take on the world if we provide the stepping stones.

Drug firms starting to drag themselves out of the gutter
Times Online – Nov 25, 2006
5 per cent share of the market. It recently completed the acquisition of the rival group Masterlek and is rapidly developing into a domestic Russian champion with enough clout to research and develop its own products and not simply churn out generic drugs. To most observers this is a welcome sign, as it represents the development of a credible home-grown industry that will encourage greater stability and the rule of law in Russia. Optimists hope that OJSC Pharmstandart and companies like it represent the future of the emerging Russian pharma industry. The big playersTop Ten companies in Russia Sanofi-Aventis 6.

The popularity of YouTube in India, where there is a “huge user base” has led to Indian YouTube `clones’ like meravideo. It remains to be seen, however, if such home-grown sites have the infrastructure and reach to compete with the virtual monopoly that YouTube has on online video-sharing at this point. DIVYA KUMAR
