A first feast

Thanksgiving dinner was “home-grown,” using vegetables from their garden. For the past two years, their lives have been interrupted by Carl’s service in the Missouri Army National Guard. Last year on this day, he was at war in Iraq. Dinner this afternoon will mark the beginning of a “new normal” for the Carrs.
Score One for NIMBYs

Oh well, the pendulum does swing both ways. I live in a part of the country where illegal immigration has been a way of life for a hundred years, or more, and so I think little of it one way or the other. But just so you know, it was the last two administrations that has caused the rest of the country to feel the effects of a mass exodus from a country devastated by what I call Multinational Corporate take over of our government for the purpose of exploiting not only extranational populations, but also our own dear home grown population. This influx is due almost completely to NAFTA and its sister treaties forcing the small farmers and small business intrapreneur in Mexico and other southern hemisphere populations to clamor across our border for survival. Like Iraq, we built it now we have to live with it. Just like illegal drugs, we want them thats why theyre here.

“EBay makes it vastly easier to set up your business, but beyond that, normal business rules apply,” said Bill Frischling, Canty’s husband, who left his job at AOL in 2004 to join his wife at Dyscern. “And we’ve seen other businesses implode, ramping up to a point they couldn’t manage. “One veteran online seller of movies and music, Glacier Bay DVD, staffed up rapidly after starting on eBay in April 2002. Within two years, it was selling $480,000 worth of goods at auction each month, according to founder Randy Smythe. But shortly after hitting its peak, Glacier Bay DVD fell into the red and eventually became “NARU” on eBay, meaning “not a registered user. ” Smythe said his business was squeezed by new competition and steady increases in eBay’s listing fees. “I didn’t pay enough attention to what was going on,” he said.

I’ve parceled out my presence with the diplomacy that only a child of divorce can, and when I got married, I threw my in-laws into the equation. I’ve even hosted Thanksgiving a time or two, a sure sign that I’m not 18 anymore. I envy all those freshmen who are home for Thanksgiving, official grown-ups, no matter how their parents tut-tut over them today. I envy them their youth, but also the power they have to make their families feel warm and happy simply by walking through the front door. "Home," wrote Robert Frost, "is the place where, when you have to go there, [t]hey have to take you in. "And Thanksgiving is the day they have to do it. My e-mail: kellyj@washpost.
