For officials, home is where the vote is
St. Petersburg Times – Oct 11, 2006
The real decision rests with Burgess because staying on council shouldn't be assured by a technicality. If his course work and commute are too taxing, then Burgess should consider relinquishing his elected position. After all, voters picked a home-grown product, not an out-of-towner, when they selected him in 2005. The alternative is for Burgess to renew his commitment to the community. And spending more time each week in Tampa than in Zephyrhills is not the way to do it. [Last modified October 11, 2006, 07:54:43] Share your thoughts on this story.

There, beneath exposedwooden beams and whirling fans, waitresses shuttle between tables, serving the 80 seats that never seem to be empty. (Reservationsaren't taken, so skip peak hours or be prepared to queue. ) For those who want to graze near the baize, head for theLisboa, Macau's oldest casino and the flagship of home-growngambling tycoon Stanley Ho. While the cramped and smoky gaminghalls of this 36-year-old casino pale against Wynn's Vegas-styleglitz across the road, the Lisboa's restaurants are excellent. Gilded Belly Venture into the gilded belly of the building for Robuchona Galera, the only restaurant in the China region of Michelinthree-star French chef Joel Robuchon. Robuchon, 61, who advisesGalera, flies in four times a year to adjust the seasonal menu, offering dishes such as pan-fried amadai (fish) fillet withcrispy skin in a black-truffle bouillon and Wagyu beef withpotato confit. The 2,800-bottle cellar is among the region'smost comprehensive… The 2,800-bottle cellar is among the region'smost comprehensive. Diners seeking simpler fare could try Noite e Dia Cafe, a24-hour eatery amid colonnades of jewelry and herbal-medicineshops in the Lisboa's basement. Look beyond the outdated decorand 1980s American pop music and enjoy some of Macau's bestPortuguese food. What's impressive about Noite e Dia Cafe is the trouble ittakes with even the simplest of dishes. Portuguese spinach soupcame in a freshly baked bread bowl, lavishly seasoned with fresholives, premium sausage slices and olive oil. The sole was fried to a golden crisp, and generouslydrenched with a lemon-butter sauce. Chocoholics must try the hotValrhona, a mellow and mildly bitter drink whipped into a smoothsilky concoction.
JAPAN: BEYOND SELF-DEFENSE?
New York Post – Oct 11, 2006
For years, defense was limited to 1 percent of the national product (about a third of what the United States spends). But Japan is by far the wealthiest country in the Far East, so that 1 percent goes a very long way. Yet the Japanese have tried very hard to buy home-grown weapons, even though they spend several times as much per tank or gun or ship or airplane as they would on the export market. And their own attempts at developing new weapons and airplanes often have been less than successful, and usually take much longer than expected. In this sense, Japan's defense program looks more like corporate welfare than a serious attempt to protect against potentially hostile neighbors. But all this can also be read as insurance.
THIS SQUAD HAS HEART OF CHAMPION

I've always felt warm about what we did on the field in 1986. I've always had passion for the Mets, even after I left for the Los Angeles Dodgers following the 1990 season. That was the biggest mistake of my career, walking away from the organization where I was home-grown, a place where I had so much success. Looking back at 1986, I still think people think fondly of that team. Hopefully, people don't remember that team for what transpired off the field, or in my personal life. I hope fans look at that team and the blessed year we had. We went from a last-place team to bringing excitement back to New York, and putting the Mets back on the map.

“The War on Terror is a fight for hearts and minds, and Gadahn gave himself to our enemies in al Qaeda for the purpose of being a central part of their propaganda machine,” McNulty said in a statement. “By making this choice, we believe Gadahn committed treason — perhaps the most serious offense for which any person can be tried under our Constitution,” he added. “Adam Gadahn represents a new breed of home-grown extremist, who has chosen to betray the country of his birth, and align with the al Qaeda terrorist network,” said FBI Executive Assistant Director Willie Hulon, national security branch. “By aligning himself with al Qaeda, by moving overseas to be closer to al Qaeda’s base and leadership, and by joining in advocating al Qaeda’s terrorist agenda, an agenda that includes the overthrow of the United States government and the murder of American citizens, Adam Gadahn has committed treason against the United States of America,” said U. Attorney Debra Wong Yang of the central district of California. “The charges returned today by a federal grand jury demonstrate that the criminal justice system will not sit passively by while a United States citizen engages in such activities,” Yang noted.
