Zito in Oakland: A Farewell to Arm?
San Diego Union Tribune – Oct 10, 2006
”
Yet to reach the age of 29, Zito and Chavez, the perennial Gold Glove third baseman from Mt. Carmel High, are about the only ones left from the old Oakland gang. Older players have been brought in – designated slugger Frank Thomas, center fielder Mark Kotsay, catcher Jason Kendall, pitcher Esteban Loaiza – but Zito's also surrounded by home-grown, long-haired talents such as Nick Swisher who carry on the A's ways. Consequently, as if by tradition, the Oakland clubhouse remains the closest thing baseball has to “Animal House. ” The music blasts as loud as ever. Almost to a man, they remain unpretentious, playful and politically incorrect. Their game is played with sufficient seriousness, but also with a sense of fun and bravura… “I normally hit the ballpark real early. We were going to Minnesota and we were playing a noon (ALDS) game, so I think (bullpen coach) Brad Fischer and I are getting in there about quarter to eight. As we're walking down the hallway, the music was already going. These guys were ready to go already. ”
For his part, Zito still looks as if he'd rather pitch in sandals and jeans, and he invariably shows up for night games with a perpetual case of bedhead. Yet he nods at the suggestion that he's become a more mature pitcher and teammate. He said he went through a transformation of sorts last year, the first season after Mulder departed, leaving Zito as the clear-cut ace.

The Nittany Lions and most of the faithful in the Keystone state wanted Henne’s script to play out in Beaver Stadium. The junior quarterback will play there Saturday, but not for Penn State. Henne resisted all the home-grown pressure and spurned the offers, and chose Michigan, where he has started every game in his career. Henne leads 6-0 Michigan, ranked No. 4 in the country, into the Pennsylvania hill country as a marked man. Although some view his college choice as treasonous, Henne won’t slink in the back door or come in under cover of darkness. He is going home when he.

‘Shoot Me Down’ is the fourth single to be lifted from their debut ‘Civilian’. Of the release singer Chris Peck said “Back in ‘95 I was lucky to spend a couple of months in Uganda with a home-grown organisation called ‘The Ruwenzori Project’. Ryder: Ottawa Senators: Deja Vu? or Not?
Globe and Mail – Oct 10, 2006
In Year 7 they ran their playoff record against the Maple Leafs to 0-4. Last season they fell to Buffalo for the third time in the post-season. During this run the Senators have had a slowly evolving, home-grown roster (hockey has a more fluid sense of stability than baseball) with a core that remained largely intact. But, as with the Blue Jays, the team seems to have lacked the character necessary to translate skill into post season success. Pat Gillick changed the character of the Blue Jays in Season 9 of their run. Now Ottawa has come to the same point. It would seem to be the moment for John Muckler to make the bold move to recharacterize this team.
West woke up too late to the nuclear threat of rogue states
unison.ie – Oct 10, 2006
From Washington to Beijing, from Moscow to Paris, from Islamabad to Delhi, from London to Tokyo, they were unanimous in their condemnation yesterday of North Korea’s announcement that it had conducted a successful test-firing of its home-grown nuclear bomb. In Washington, the White House demanded that the UN Security Council take immediate action to punish Pyongyang for its blatant defiance of world opinion.
Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh met Tony Blair at Downing Street
Politics.co.uk – Oct 10, 2006
She rejected Liberal Democrat claims that the current crisis represented a “massive failure” by US and British foreign policy which had been “disastrously” side-tracked by Iraq and failed to notice what North Korea was doing. Nor did she accept suggestions that Pyongyang had been forced to develop nuclear technology when faced with the threat of the US, which branded North Korea part of the ‘axis of evil’ along with Iran and Iraq following the September 11th attacks. “This is a North Korean failure – home grown,” Ms Beckett told MPs, adding that people were “mistaken in thinking this in some way followed or was exacerbated by anything President Bush or anyone else has said”. At the press conference in Downing Street earlier, Mr Blair and Mr Singh were questioned about the difference between North Korea’s nuclear ambitions and those of India, whose decision to conduct nuclear tests in 1998 was widely condemned. North Korea was a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty but withdrew in 2003 after admitting nuclear activities. India, Pakistan and Israel – all nuclear states – have not signed up. “The difference between a country like Britain or a country like India, and a country like North Korea, is that we are democracies, we abide by the rule of law, we abide by our international obligations,” Mr Blair replied.
