Independent Online – Sep 19, 2006
This comes on the day the union re-signed Springboks Bryan Habana, Wynand Olivier and Bakkies Botha to long term futures in Pretoria after they had been chased by the Sharks. A total of 16 of the best juniors on display at this year’s Craven Week have been contracted by the Bulls. This includes recruiting the best young players of colour in the country, while also looking after a host of home grown talent at the same time. The SA Schools players contracted include the Hoerskool Waterkloof quartet of wingers Wynand Willis and Aubrey McDonald, centre Stefan Watermeyer and fyhalf and centre Divan Kotze. A fifth player from Klofies, loosehead prop Corne Fourie has also been signed after making the SA Schools B side. Affies captain Gerhard van Velze, who was also included in the SA Schools B side, and tighthead prop Frik Kirsten, a star in the SA Schools side, will continue their school’s proud tradition of producing Blue Bulls players.

It’s just a matter of finding it. A little soul-searchingTo help with that soul-searching, city leaders are holding public forums, hiring outside consultants and conducting community surveys. They’re setting up home-grown festivals and events, taking cues from such cities as Issaquah, which draws 150,000 visitors each fall to its hugely popular Salmon Days. The two-day festival builds on the city’s signature salmon hatchery and generates a $7. 5 million economic impact for the city, according to the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce. Other cities look to their local history, geographic features or dominant industries to create a unique image — from Redmond’s high-tech focus to Snoqualmie’s majestic falls and historic railroad depot. For some, even a small touch can reap big rewards.

They never turn one down, no matter how funny they look. Oh, and about that thing of heading for disaster, life is short as it is, and we need to grab as much pleasure as we can while we can. Here at our house we like to eat homemade tortillas with butter or peanut butter and homemade jam or our home grown honey. It doesn’t get much better than that. By Eunice Farmilant, 9-20-06 Dear Marcia,Eating flour torillas laden with fatty foods and sweet sticky things is one way to ensure that your life will be even shorter. And perhaps our government prefers it that way—less social security benefits to hand out. Of course, the occasional torilla won’t kill anyone, but a steady diet of them is quite questionable.

Despite continued scepticism around Asia and the rest of the world about the ethics of buying in African talent, particularly by Gulf states like Qatar and Bahrain, Team Asia’s outstanding showing in Athens was down to more than some countries opening their chequebooks. Second places were achieved by Iranian discus thrower Ehsan Hadadi, Japanese pole vaulter Daichi Sawano and China’s 2004 Olympic Games 110m hurdles gold medallist and world record holder Liu Xiang. All are home-grown talent in their respective countries. There had been much talk of Liu breaking his own world record in Athens, the scene of his gold-medal winning performance two years ago, but despite running a world class time of 13. 03sec he had to concede victory to American former three-time world champion Allen Johnson. “The starter was very fast,” said Liu, ruefully admitting he had been left in his blocks by the inspired Johnson. Team Asia’s women’s team finished a more modest seventh out of the nine teams in Athens with only one win over the weekend.

(From University Wire) Byline: Meredith Turits It’s likely that in some dimension you grew up with New Found Glory, whether they were the band that helped you discover music outside the radio or even taught you what you didn’t like in a vocalist. The band that has likely graced your stereo at some point since 1997 is back with a solid album that takes the band in a different and pleasantly unexpected direction. “Coming Home” is the Florida five-piece’s attempt to reclaim footing in the currently ultra-trendy alternative scene — a place where the band secured a top seat following their sophomore, self-titled release.
