A disingenuous campaign against US colas
International Herald Tribune – Aug 25, 2006
Coca- Cola was also asked to reveal its secret formula. Both companies chose to leave. Then, in a bizarre indication of its priorities, the government spent millions of rupees developing a home-grown cola to replace Coke. That state-led effort, called 77, failed miserably; the Parle group, a private Indian company, swept the market with a drink called Thums Up. Undeterred by Coca-Cola's withdrawal, Pepsi ventured into India in the mid-1980s. It agreed to fairly onerous conditions imposed by the government, including forming a joint venture with a state-run company, promising to export five times what it would import, and investing in India's agricultural sector. In 1993, Coca-Cola returned after India liberalized its economy, permitting foreign ownership in most businesses.

The company has executive offices in Beijing, Singapore and Purchase, New York. Its president and chief executive is William Amelio, a former senior executive at Dell. So we sat down with the four public high school football coaches as well as Hernando Christian Academy's Steve Johnson to discuss their varying philosophies on building a successful program in the area. Their perspectives vary: from an out-of-towner like Nature Coast's Jamie Joyner to a home-grown coach like Cliff Lohrey, who was raised in Citrus County and played for long-time Crystal River coach Earl Bramlett. But in the end, their goals are the same. – DAVID MURPHY, VINCENT THOMAS AND WILL VRAGOVIC [Last modified August 22, 2006, 11:23:57] Share your thoughts on this story.

So do turnips and beets and most of the other root vegetables and cold crops that have been soaking up storm water in Southcentral Alaska quite happily all August long. None so ravenously as one 82-pound kohlrabi, which shattered the old world record for kohlrabies by nearly 20 pounds this week.
