But while Mr Lamont’s success has been widely attributed to therising power of the anti-war movement and liberal internetbloggers, the 52-year-old upstart from Greenwich became a politicalgiant-killer by blending new and old-style politics. He tapped thenet roots to promote his cause — but the grass roots to winover voters. Despite the national implications of Mr Lamont’s candidacy, hiscampaign retained a distinctly local flavour, staffed by veteranstate operatives and a home-grown volunteer corps. As the hype grew, the campaign stuck to the basics. It focusedon building a file of likely voters, organising a turn-out effort,and circulating Mr Lamont at events, including gatherings in loungerooms. “The story is really about voters in Connecticut who stood withNed Lamont,” said Tom Matzzie, political director for the anti-warorganisation MoveOn.

Ludwe Booi (Pretoria Technical High), Thom Marothodi (Pretoria Boys’ High), Yves Bashiya (Capricorn), Adillio Coutriers (Menlopark) and Fudge Mabeta (Pretoria Boys’ High) are all home-grown players. The others include Llewellyn Adonis (son of SA Rugby’s coaching director Hilton Adonis and a product of Malmesbury), Riacco Eilard (Jacobsdal), Burton Francis (Paarl), Musa Tukela (Qumba, near Umtata), Thys Thile (Umtata) and Luthando Show (Daniel Pienaar). “The local schools have taken the lead in helping us develop our own talent and we are thankful to them,” said team coach Nico Serfontein. The Blue Bulls have been at the forefront of junior rugby, supplying the majority of players to the SA Under-19 and Under-21 teams this year again.
