Form and function intersect

She found a site in North Raleigh in an established neighborhood. The Davis Residence is a work of contemporary architecture rooted in local vernacular building. Vernacular architecture is sometimes defined as the home-grown or garden variety architecture of the past. It can provide inspiration for contemporary architects. Bizios’ designs typically use the pitched roof that signifies home to most people, but with a more modern, open, interior that responds to the way many prefer to live today. With its simple, legible forms and minimal approach to detail, the vernacular is also a good source of inspiration for a house on a tight budget. The traditional forms of the Davis house are clad with new, low-maintenance versions of older materials.

Ithappened when he was growing up in Wyoming. He wanted a baseball glove. So he figured he’d sell home-grown corn to raise the money. He went into the family garden and picked a wagonful of corn, whichhe sold to neighbors. Trouble is, it was field corn, which he had sold as sweet corn, saidhis daughter, Patti Johnson, of Lakewood. His dad came home and asked who had been in the garden.

Capel can revive community spirit

So it is to be hoped that the abrupt departure of director of cricket Kepler Wessels on Friday can signal the return to a policy with a more tangible link to the community. Overseas coaches can have much to commend them, but when a county lose a string of home-grown players and acquire the nickname of Steelboks rather than Steelbacks, then there is clearly a problem. That will be the easy part. More tricky will be resolving the future of Wessels’s son, Riki, who, like his father, has a year remaining on contract.

Away from these two masssive transfers, it appears that Steve McClaren could be on the verge of making his first appointment as the new England head coach, and it is not one that is going to make the Yorkshireman many friends in the corridors of power at Soho Square. The Daily Mail alledge that PR guru Max Clifford, the man who represented Faria Alam in her dealings with the Football Association (FA), is set to be appointed as a PR adviser to McClaren as the new man in the FA hot seat attempts to win over those supporters sceptical about his appointment. Elsewhere, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger laments the escalation of transfer fees for young, home-grown British talent in the Mirror; Spurs’ attempt to replace the Old Trafford-bound Carrick with Liverpool’s injury-prone winger Harry Kewell have floundered on the Australian’s wage demands say the Sun; and the Daily Star reports that unsettled England international Ashley Cole has gone AWOL from north London, with the left-back having been due back at the Emirates stadium five days ago from his honeymoon. And finally, various papers are claiming that Chris Sutton is on the verge of a shock return to St Andrews, only months after the one-time England striker left the Midlands following a brief loan spell there last season, while Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has issued a warning to Shaun Wright-Phillips in the Mirror, telling the speedster that he is in the last-chance saloon at Stamford Bridge this season.

Army recruitment process comes under a shadow

In the wake of shocking disclosure this past week about alleged links of three Army soldiers with the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant outfit in Jammu and Kashmir, questions are being raised over the method employed to cross-check the antecedents of people entrusted with the task of protecting the country from both foreign and home-grown enemies. In fact, there have been instances here in the Capital in the past exposing gross shortcomings in the recruitment procedure. Revelations made by those arrested by the Delhi police about three years ago on charges of running a racket guaranteeing jobs in the Army on the basis of forged documents were an eye-opener. The racket run in the garb of a physical training centre was unearthed when the police arrested a former Army Medical Corps Naik, Ram Sewak. Investigations revealed that Ram Sewak used to arrange identification papers, all forged, for candidates who paid for the “extra” work.

I suggested that domestic music was in very poor shape. I’ve had little cause to change my mind over the intervening 12 months. This year alone, only three home-grown albums have excited me: Republic of Loose’sAaagh (much to my surprise, I might add); Si Schroeder’sCopingMechanisms; and the forthcomingNot Fade Away by David Kitt. By contrast, Sweden – a country marginally more populous than Ireland – has been producing a disproportionately large number of fantastic albums.
