Food detective: tomatoes
Times Online – Jul 22, 2006
There’s nothing to match that fresh greenhouse smell of a ripe tomato, yet for decades we have been palmed off with insipid imitations. Now, however, there is a move back to flavour over longevity, and the most heartening sight of all is the voluptuous mounds of home-grown tomatoes in all shapes, sizes and colours at farmers’ markets. Can British tomatoes compete with imported ones? According to the Tomato Growers’ Association (TGA), we are now producing around 75,000 metric tonnes of tomatoes a year – about half the volume sold in summer – and while we will never be self-sufficient, says the association’s Julie Woolley, “people are really being converted. Because the tomatoes can be in the shops within one to three days, British growers can pick them when they are ripe, rather than under-ripe for travel. Customers are finally making the connection between the fact that if you buy a tomato from Spain or the Canaries, it will have been chilled during the journey, and that can impair their flavour. ” Which are the bestselling varieties?.

Not only did the Redbirds bring the St. Louis heat and humidity west, they also remembered to stow their heavy lumber and Jeff Weaver’s sinker. Looking downright at home in La La Land, the Cardinals extended a recent run of perfection over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night with a 6-1 win that was equal parts power and starting pitching. Another win Sunday would give the Cardinals their first sweep of the teams’ season series. Home runs by center fielder Jim Edmonds, first baseman Albert Pujols and rookie left fielder Chris Duncan accounted for four runs of a six-run binge that allowed the Cardinals to run up a 6-1 lead against starter Aaron Sele (6-4) and lefthanded reliever Joe Beimel. The recently acquired surfer dude from Simi Valley, Weaver (1-1) atoned for the four-inning.
