The bi-partisan, bi-cameral proposal is called the “Alternative Energy Refueling System Act of 2006” and is designed to expand the availability of home-grown energy options. The bill is sponsored by in the House by Congressmen Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE), Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Mark Udall (D-CO) and on the Senate side by Senators John Thune (R-SD) and Barack Obama (D-IL). “The use of renewable energy sources such as ethanol and bio-diesel helps meet multiple public policy objectives,” Fortenberry said. “They reduce our dependence on foreign energy, are environmentally sensitive, and create economic opportunities for America’s farmers and rural communities. ”Missouri Senator Jim Talent said a new era in fuel production has already begun.
