Research fraud rampant in China
Christian Science Monitor – May 16, 2006
By Robert Marquand | Staff writer of The Christian Science MonitorBEIJING – The stunning revelation of fraud and fakery in the heart of China’s R&D industry has vindicated a feisty set of scholars who are gaining traction in exposing a culture of fraud and corruption in China’s colleges. Just days ago authorities revealed that the Hanxin digital signal chip, a so-called “Chinese chip” designed to enhance home-grown computer technology, is not an original. Chen Jin, “father of the Chinese chip,” evidently used a product from a foreign firm to win a lucrative bid in 2003 – ironically, to spearhead a much publicized patriotic national drive to create a Chinese super microchip.

Japanese airline mulls launching low-cost carriers
Taipei Times – May 16, 2006
The ANA spokeswoman said the budget carrier plan was not definite. “We have to examine the plan from now on but nothing official has been decided yet,” she said. Home-grown budget airlines have already limited domestic service, including Skymark Airlines Co which in February slashed fares on some of its routes in Japan by another 50 percent. The launch of budget carriers would be another step up for ANA in its rivalry with JAL, which has been stung by a series of safety scares. Both Japanese airlines have seen their bottom line suffer due to high oil costs. JAL plunged into the red in the financial year to March, although it expects to return to profit this year. Dearth of locals clouds season
Telegraph.co.uk – May 16, 2006
With reports of 20 teams signing up for the Gold Cup at Cowdray Park, all on the polo lawns looks rosy, were it not for the paucity of English professionals. Last year, 17 high-goal teams had only six English players. Several discussions have been held over the future of the British professional polo player and last season a four-man all-English team was put together for the Queen’s Cup, with support from the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA). They fared brilliantly. HPA chairman Christopher Hanbury says little can be done because EU legislation allows many overseas players to play in the game’s high-end.
