On Monday, Disney-owned ABC said it would webcast complete ad-supported episodes of four TV series, including Lost and Desperate Housewives, in May and June, the day after their initial airing (story, 1B). ABC, NBC, MTV, Comedy Central and other networks also offer reruns for sale at Apple’s iTunes Music Store. Home-grown video sites such as YouTube and Heavy are attracting millions of people. But if video on the Web has come of age, more basic Web tasks are not ready for prime time — yet. And even video offerings are a mixed bag — some are crystal clear on a TV screen, with robust, detailed images. Others are cramped, with poor visual quality.

Collectively, those customers are spending way more on [home-grown systems] than they are on ERP [enterprise resource planning]. We want to harness four or five big industries with packaged applications and get telecom companies and banking companies to quit building their own systems. Banking will be huge for us; they spend $30 billion a year on IT and a lot of that is building stuff, and a lot of them are tired of doing it. Others are telecom, the public sector, health care, high tech and retail.

The Governor helped break ground at the future site of Harman Stove Company’s new manufacturing facility on Armstrong Valley Road in Halifax Township and said the project will result in the creation of at least 277 jobs within five years, plus the retention of 270 existing employees. “The Harman Stove Company is a great example of how a ‘home grown’ business can expand and flourish,” Governor Rendell.

More than 130 prayer leaders from across the continent, whose meeting was sponsored by Austria as current EU president, agreed Islamic theologians in Europe must do more to establish that their faith does not clash with Western values. Their declaration published yesterday amounted to a catalogue of home-grown moderate views that Western politicians have been urging Muslim leaders to draw up as a bulwark against radical Islamist ideologies coming from the Middle East. But an attack on an Islamic cemetery being built in Vienna reminded them of the hostility Muslims meet across Europe. “Muslims in Europe are making history,” said Mouddar Khouja, a senior official of the Islamic Community in Austria, which organised the two-day meeting where several speakers urged “new thinking” to develop a theological basis for Islam in Europe. He said European imams were issuing fatwas dealing with modern challenges, such as condemning terrorism, instead of leaving the field open to radical Middle Eastern preachers who glorify violence on the Internet. “We have shown how to protect ourselves from fatwas from other countries,” he said.
