Some lucky ones had access to either home-grown or smuggled -well, mostly home-grown because smuggling could get you two years inprison at least. "The lucky ones, they had it, but the quality was very poor. If youhad it in your garden nobody could call the police, because they didn’tknow what it was. "But, says Josef Rauvolf, things have changed hugely since the VelvetRevolution. And not just among the younger generation.

UK bars poaching of medical staff
Guardian Unlimited – Dec 27, 2005
The Department for International Development and the Department of Health are working hard to address these problems. DfID has provided £560m over the last five years to support health and health systems development in Africa, including the training of nurses and doctors. And the Department of Health is putting huge investment into the expansion of the medical and nursing workforces at home so that we have a new generation of home-grown staff coming through – we now have more doctors and nurses in training than ever before. The UK is providing support to many countries in Africa to improve their health services, including addressing shortages of health workers. In Malawi, we are providing £55m to increase the number of doctors and nurses in training by 50%, to increase salaries and pay for volunteer doctors and nurse tutors to cover the large number of vacancies while Malawian doctors and nurses are trained to fill them. NBL local stars beat world
NEWS.com.au – news.com.au – Dec 27, 2005
In a game showcasing the best of the NBL’s home-grown talent against the pick of the import crop, the locals started the game full of running before cruising home to collect their second consecutive win in the annual exhibition game. With defence low on the list of priorities behind high-flying dunks and fancy passes, the locals racked up 44 first quarter points to take a commanding 21-point lead into the first break. The early onslaught effectively put an end the match as a contest as the Australians maintained a comfortable break on their rivals, with more interest being on who could outdo the other with their aerial acrobatics. Wollongong import Cortez Groves got the crowd on its feet with several high-flying dunks, but it was Sydney Kings skipper Jason Smith who stole the show, delighting his hometown fans with a spectacular alley-oop dunk and some sweet outside shooting. Smith tallied 16 of his 19 points in the opening term, while the silky ball skills of veteran Melbourne point-guard Darryl McDonald, who was named the game MVP, saw him hand out six of his game-high 10 assists in the first quarter.

Soccer: Gerrard’s next goal: World Cup victory
New Zealand Herald – Dec 27, 2005
It was a move with inextricable links to one unforgettable night in Istanbul. The night of May 25 brought Liverpool their finest moment for 21 years and the greatest of their captain’s 25. The European Cup final that Gerrard ranks on a par with the birth of his daughter, Lilly-Ella, requires no repetition; every goal, miss and penalty kick is already etched into football’s psyche, as is the inspiration provided by Liverpool’s home-grown, talismanic leader. Having seized a game that was heading towards humiliation at halftime, midfielder Gerrard sank his teeth into a winners’ medal of such magnitude that he felt compelled to buy a new house. Allow him to explain: “I’ve just moved into a new house, and, to be honest, there was a bit of friction with my girlfriend over what to do with certain rooms. “One of the ideas behind the move was to have a special room to record everything I have done so far. “I managed to get the whole top floor, to turn it into a memorabilia room, so you can imagine where that medal is, right in the middle, hanging on a mannequin… The 2010 World Cup will be really difficult in South Africa but this one in Germany will really suit us. “We’ve got to make the most of it. ” Only two Englishmen, Sir Bobby Charlton and Nobby Stiles, have won both the European Cup and World Cup before and the thought of joining that select band fills Gerrard with awe. He leans back in his chair at Liverpool’s Melwood training ground as he digests the possibility of ultimate success in Germany, or is it the galling realisation that, once armed with a World Cup winners’ medal, he will have to go house-hunting once again? “No, I wouldn’t need another room for that,” he says. ” – INDEPENDENT

What do the advocates of scientific socialism have to say on this extremely nationalist description of a crucial dispute between their countries?
When the Indian parliament passed an avoidably jingoistic resolution during the Narasimha Rao administration, we did not hear any of the two main communist parties protesting. If anything they tacitly, if not actively, supported the motion that decreed the retrieval of
