On the ball with Bravo
The Independent – Independent – Dec 19, 2005
But the whole history of men is about telling stories. “Man’s Work, commissioned from Shine Productions, will place Bravo presenter Ashley Hames in what Webb describes as the “most excessive, dangerous, dirtiest, most expansive, transformative jobs in the world”, such as helicopter logging, opal mining in Australia and crab fishing in Alaska. Comedy is also crucial to Bravo’s new identity and, unlike the home-grown content of the original programming, Webb has chosen to buy in American product. He’s especially excited about It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, made by Rupert Murdoch’s FX and set in a blue-collar Irish bar. He describes the show as “totally un-PC for the right reasons, so really challenging”. The programme, which has some parallels with the social faux pas made by Larry David’s character in Curb Your Enthusiasm, deals with such issues as “homophobia, racism, child abuse and right at the edge subjects”. But the key to Bravo’s strategy is Richardson’s Football Italia.

That’s 39 and 30 percent Rhode Island representation, respectively. If URI had men’s and women’s varsity hockey teams, the percentage of Rhode Island players wouldn’t likely be quite that high. I don’t even consider a team with 30 or 39 percent of its players from Rhode Island to be stacked with home-grown talent. But by the URI standard of commitment to having the state’s student-athletes on theirrosters, they definitely are stacked with Rhode Islanders. The women’s volleyball team has 14 players on the roster, none from Rhode Island. It’s the same situation for the women’s gymnastic team, which has a roster of 20. The volleyball and gymnastics teams aren’t the only teams with low Rhode Island representation.
Migrants see another Hong Kong
BBC News – Dec 19, 2005
Attempts to include it in world trade talks have been rebuffed by rich countries, notably the US, which does not want an international treaty which would interfere with its own immigration policy. And the forces driving such migration – rural poverty in Asia – was also the focus of the trade talks. Indonesia is leading a group of countries that are seeking a special exemption from global trade rules to ensure that home-grown rural products are protected from imports. And it is the cost of adjustment which also drove the anti-globalisation protests seen in Hong Kong. Gaining public support for trade liberalisation will be harder until better arrangement for compensating the losers are in place – as the head of the World Trade Organization, Pascal Lamy, admits.
Fifa boss Blatter attacks Chelsea
BBC News – Dec 19, 2005
He wants restrictions on imports and said: “This helps the public identify with the players in the team. It would also ensure the rich do not get richer and the poor become poorer. ”
Blatter had previously cited Liverpool as a team without enough home-grown players, but said the issue was ultimately down to individual national associations. “This is the system which Fifa thinks is right,” said Blatter. “In clubs like Liverpool and Bayern Munich there’s only one or two domestic players. This isn’t good for football. ”
Liverpool’s first-team squad includes the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Peter Crouch, Stephen Warnock and Scott Carson – all of whom are qualified to play for England.

19–A Walnut Creek winery that has been in the planning stages for more than a year might open this spring if the City Council agrees Tuesday to allow wine-making in the North Gate area. Tim Jochner, who was born and raised in Walnut Creek, said he’s anxious to produce several varieties of wine on property just beyond the city’s border, in the unincorporated county. He’s hoping downtown restaurants will serve the home-grown vintages, complete with Walnut Creek labels. "I don’t think we’ll make a profit," he.
2005 Annual Defence Report: major events and future trends
Jane's – Dec 19, 2005
Moving into 2006, many of the resolutions demanded by the challenges of the past few years could well start to become apparent – within the defence industry certainly, but also on the world stage as a whole. US offshore operations
No other event has illustrated the power and limitation of the US military quite like Iraq. After crushing the forces of Saddam Hussein quickly, the US-led coalition has struggled with a deadly insurgency of home-grown opponents and foreign extremists. To deal with the problem, Washington has focused on standing up, and making operationally effective, security forces of the new Iraqi government. US military officials have continually insisted this process is proceeding apace, while civilian views are less sanguine, noting that Iraqi forces have a long way to go. Another option floated by Washington – that international partners would help address the problem – collapsed almost completely during the past year as the number of coalition countries providing troops steadily shrunk. Not only did no new major troop contributors step forward to help ‘internationalise’ the Iraq operations, but a steady stream of donors, including Italy, South Korea, Poland and Ukraine, said they would begin pulling out their forces.
