More than 60 killed in Iraq suicide attacks UPDATE
Forbes – Nov 18, 2005
Elsewhere in the country, four civilians were wounded, one seriously, when a car bomb exploded this morning near a convoy of 4×4 vehicles in Kanaan, near Baquba, northwest of Baghdad, police said. The US military reported the death on Thursday of a US soldier in a road crash near the northwestern town of Tal Afar, where the US military carried out a large-scale operation targeting insurgents recently. The US military believes the level of violence will increase in the run-up to the December 15 general election, at a time when military analysts suggest some 3,000 foreigners are now fighting alongside home-grown insurgents. ‘This level of chaos and violence is going to increase, almost in spite of what we do, between now and the election,’ according to a senior US commander in Iraq, interviewed before the latest attacks. Violence is likely to increase because of the ongoing political struggle in the run-up to the elections, with some groups taking part in the political process while fighting at the same time, the senior officer said. In Washington, a US military analyst, citing a study drawing on Saudi and other regional intelligence, suggested that as many as 3,000 foreigners are involved in the insurgency, in addition to the thousands of local people. Algerians constituted the highest percentage of the foreign fighters, about 20 pct, followed by Syrians, Yemenis, Sudanese, Egyptians and Saudis, said Anthony Cordesman, an expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

And the US military reported the death of a US soldier in a road crash near the northwestern Iraqi town of Tal Afar, the 13th American serviceman to die in the country over a three-day period. At least 2083 US military personnel have been killed in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion, according to an AFP tally based on the independent Iraq Coalition Casualty Count. The US military believes the level of violence will increase in the run-up to the December 15 general election, at a time when military analysts suggest some 3000 foreigners are now fighting alongside home-grown insurgents. “This level of chaos and violence is going to increase, almost in spite of what we do, between now and the election,” according to a senior US commander in Iraq, interviewed before the latest attacks. “We’re fighting Al Qaeda in Iraq represented by elements tied to (Abu Musab) Zarqawi” and other foreigners, he said, speaking of the Jordanian-born leader of the most notorious insurgent group, responsible for some of the more spectacular attacks and gruesome killings. But “we’re fighting for the most part people who feel disenfranchised by the current government,” he also acknowledged, adding that there were “mostly Sunnis”. The Sunni Arab minority, dominant under ousted dictator Saddam Hussein, largely boycotted January’s general elections and is under-represented in the current parliament, whose term expires in mid-December.

“Mike Cronn coaches each and every prop in New Zealand. He analyses each prop and writes a dossier on them and gives them quality feedback. ”

The Wallabies, meanwhile, are going through more home-grown talent than in any season in living memory. Fitter’s selection makes him the 14th player to make his Test debut this season and while ARU officials have been able to establish that there were 13 debutants way back in the year of the State of Emergency Test, 1971, they’ve not been able to find any precedent to this year’s massive injection of new blood. Jones, who as Brumbies coach in 2000 recruited Fitter when the Sydney University prop weighed in at a grossly unfit 135kg, lauded the 28 year old’s “stickability” in continuing to work at improving his game over five long seasons, despite the fact that in all that time he played barely 180 minutes of Super 12 rugby. “Fitter, I think, is a guy who has worked very, very hard to get where he’s at,” Jones said. “His scrummaging is his passion.

9 percent in the last four weeks, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. Consumer confidence, as measured by leading surveys, fell after Katrina in September and October, but the shopping behavior of Americans appears to provide mixed evidence of that. Retail sales, excluding automobiles and gasoline, have grown briskly in recent months. But real estate agents and others in the industry have reported that homes are staying on the market longer, and that prices are increasing more slowly or even falling in some of the nation’s hottest markets. Reports on other forms of economic activity have looked positive in recent weeks, as they did yesterday. In one, the Federal Reserve said industrial production rose by 0. 9 percent in October as more factories, oil refineries and other plants on the Gulf Coast resumed operations.

Missouri caught in Snyder’s shadow

Still, during the past decade and a half, Snyder has been arguably the most well-known man in the state of Kansas. Sure, Roy Williams made a name for himself in the 15 years he spent as head coach of the Kansas basketball team. And home-grown Bob Dole made a run for the United States presidency in 1996. But has anyone in the state enjoyed more unbridled success for a longer period of time?“I don’t think anybody in college coaching has done what Bill Snyder has done,” said Kansas City Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil. “I broadcast for 14 years and seven or eight of them were in college football, and no football coach did a better job of coaching football players than Bill Snyder. No coach of the year.
