Local film-maker Eric Khoo’s “Be With Me” received a five-minute standing ovation when it opened at the prestigious Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. Singapore is also home to international design bodies and media brand names. So it’s felt the time is right that due recognition is given to home-grown creative talents through the inaugural President’s Design Award. Singapore President SR Nathan said: “The President’s Design Award is an important initiative to nurture and encourage Singapore’s pool of creative talent to excel in their chosen field of expertise. “By recognising and celebrating our most successful and creative professionals, the award should help raise awareness and garner due respect for our designers and their works, and engender national pride in their achievements. ”

Two categories of awards are offered annually – the “Singapore Designers of the Year” and “Singapore Designs of the Year. ”

Public nominations close in March 2006.

So when the capital market is hot, on the one hand you have higher valuations, on the other hand success breeds more interest and hence requires less education [about the role played by VCs]. I’m told that if you really want to back a successful entrepreneur, you better deal with the home-grown guy, not the slick “sea turtle” returnee. This is when you bet on the domestic Chinese economy. The savviest local businesspeople know their customers, the distribution network, and the value chain best. We’re backing a lot more people who never left China or speak English. They fought the street battles and won against intense domestic competition.

Many lawmakers insist that the government should purchase home-grown defense gear, limit foreign acquisitions of defense-related assets, and keep a tight lid on exports of even unclassified technology. Yet somehow, the Rockville (Md. ) unit of BAE is always the exception. The United Defense deal was just the latest prize BAE has nabbed. In 2004 alone, it acquired five U.

“We are almost there. In fact, riding on the popularity of Nach Baliye, we have become number two in Mumbai, dethroning Sony,” claims Ajay quoting TAM ratings. In an obvious reference to Sony’s Fame Gurukul, Ajay points out the popularity of The Laughter Challenge and Nach Baliye also prove the success of home-grown formats. However, it is too early to say because Indian Idol has been a thumping success.
