State flexes its incentives
News & Observer – Oct 22, 2005
“There are so many companies we are close to getting. But they are holding back on expansion” until the economy improves. To help home-grown businesses, Easley is considering asking the legislature for a targeted corporate income tax cut for small businesses that would exclude the tax on the first $25,000 to $50,000 of annual profits. The governor is reluctant to say North Carolina’s economy is turning a corner. He said there are too many textile and furniture jobs still being lost overseas. Even with the new plants, the economic news last week was mixed. Duke Energy said it would slash its work force by 2,000 jobs, including about 400 in Charlotte and an unknown number in the Triangle.

ROCKET FULES THIS MATCHUP. BUT ANDY IS THE ASTRO TO ROOT FOR
New York Daily News – Oct 22, 2005
With that and some big-game pitching he eventually won skeptical Yankees fans over as well. Still, in New York he could never be Pettitte, the home-grown lefty forever remembered for getting the Yankees over the World Series hump with that brilliant Game 5 win over John Smoltz and the Braves in 1996. For that matter, Clemens is here, making this historic start for the Astros, only because the Yankees were dumb enough to let Pettitte leave, a move that eventually dragged his mentor out of retirement. Don’t hold that against Clemens. He deserves your admiration as he takes the ball and tries to add to his legacy tonight. That may not be reason enough to root for the Astros.

Saraswathi KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (Bernama) – Asia Telecoms, a home-grown telecommunication company may not ring a bell to many at present, but is quietly charting its way to becoming a regional player and perhaps the “Vodafone” of the Asia Pacific along the same lines of the European telco giant. It aims to achieve to provide value-added communication services at affordable prices but with no compromise on quality. And it wants to prove its capability on the home turf first now that it has secured a network service provider licence (NSPL) from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. With an NSPL licence, Asia Telecoms will be able to offer its own 01X number, said the co-founder and chief executive officer of Asia Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Danesh Pannirselvam. Despite Malaysia having three established mobile service providers – Maxis, DiGi and Celcom — the founders of Asia Telecoms believe that there is still room for growth, he said.

Threat response is measured
Australian – Oct 22, 2005
It’s thought our turn will come and, sooner or later, an Islamist terror strike will occur in one of our cities. It is against this backdrop that Attorney-General Philip Ruddock will introduce next month the biggest changes to Australia’s security laws since World WarII. The home-grown London bombings in July and the second round of suicide bombers in Bali three weeks ago have simply heightened the sense of foreboding. Since 2000 there has been at least one aborted, disrupted or actual terrorist attack against Australians or Australian interests, underlining the reality and persistence of the threat. In late 2001, planning for an attack by Jemaah Islamiah in Singapore, including against the Australian High Commission, was disrupted by Singaporean authorities. Then came the October 2002 Bali attacks that killed 88 Australians. In October 2003, French and Australian security agencies disrupted planning for an attack in Australia involving an al-Qa’ida cell led by Frenchman Willy Brigitte.
