address, the president’s first major speech on the hurricane, would not be a State of the Union ”laundry list” of proposals. Instead, they said, it would focus more generally on Mr. Bush’s vision for the reconstruction of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, with the federal government playing a supportive role to what White House officials are calling a ”home-grown” plan that must be created by city and state authorities. ”We’re in the beginning of the rebuilding at this point, and there are a lot of ideas that people are expressing,” Scott McClellan, the White House press secretary, told reporters on Air Force One on Wednesday. ”The president wants people to think big. Britain to lift ban on older cattle meat, introduce new BSE test
Forbes – Sep 15, 2005
2005, 12:41 PMLONDON (AFX) – The British government said it will lift a ban on older cattle entering the food chain and introduce a new scheme to test animals for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or ‘mad cow’ disease. The decision, which will increase the amount of home-grown beef for sale, was welcomed by livestock farmers. The Over Thirty Months rule, which banned cattle aged 30 months from entering the food chain, will be phased out and replaced by testing from November 7. British cattle born after July 31, 1996, may be sold for human consumption should they test negative for BSE, said the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Cattle born before that date, however, will still be banned, it added. Other controls to combat mad cow disease remain in place, including the removal of tissue such as the brain, spinal cord and the intestines, which are the likeliest to carry possible BSE infection.
